2009 Interclub National Championship - April 18-19 @ Larchmont YC Log-In to Post/Reply

The 2009 Interclub National Championship presented by ACE Recreational Marine Insurance is just 6 days away -- April 18-19 @ Larchmont YC. We are expecting 55-60 Interclubs on the starting line for one of the largest IC nationals in the past 10 years.

For more information, go to the IC Nationals homepage. Over 35 boats are already registered, though it'd help us a lot if the stragglers got their entries in. It's going to be a great event -- lots of boats, an extremely tough fleet, a bunch of sponsors who have stepped up to support the event, including Heineken who will be providing free beer and we'll have a free raffle after Saturday night's dinner with stuff for virtually everyone. There will be breakfast snacks both Saturday and Sunday, dinner on Saturday night, embroidered fleece hats for all skippers and crews, free backpacks stuffed with stuff, a port-o-potty on a floating dock, a top notch PRO in Butch Ulmer and a bunch of other stuff.

If you have an IC and are on the fence about coming, just show up -- we will also offer housing on a first-come, first-serve basis (more reason to get those entries in ASAP). If you don't have an IC but want to get out there for the unofficial frostbiting national championship, we have some free loaner boats still available -- just bring a crew and warm gear (and get in touch with me so we can reserve a boat for you).

The 2009 Interclub National Championship is presented by ACE Recreational Marine Insurance (www.acemarineinsurance.com), Heineken, Quantum Sails, North Sails, Kinder Industries, Burgee, Annapolis Performance Sailing, UK Halsey, Phil's Foils, Colie Pro Shop, The Dinghy Locker, Doyle Sails and Harken. Sailing: Larchmont YC dominates at 2009 Interclub National Championship
By Josh Thomson

April 20, 2009

Danny Pletsch and Kari Sachs of Larchmont Yacht Club won the 2009 Interclub National Championship yesterday at their home club, capping a dominant weekend at the event for Larchmont.

The Pletsch-Sachs boat breezed to victory in four of the 11 races held over the two-day regatta.

Their performance wasn't alone among the host club's highlights. Theirs was one of six boats from Larchmont Yacht Club to place in the top 10.

The husband-wife team of John and Molly Baxter finished second overall, thanks to a victory in the 11th and final race of the weekend yesterday. The Baxters, from Greenwich, Conn., had won the last two national championships for Interclub racers.

The Interclub is a two-person craft raced by sailors during the winter months.

David Dowd and Tricia Leicht finished fourth overall, and P.J. Patin and Anne Patin placed fifth. Steve Benjamin and Charlie McHugh (seventh) and Dan Ronan and Sophia Lesser (10th) also placed in the top 10 for LYC.

The Benjamin-McHugh team (first and sixth races), Ted Ferrarone and Meridith Killion (third) and the Patins (ninth) all won at least one race with Interclubs sailing out of Larchmont.

In total, 29 of the 55 boats in the field were from Larchmont, which hosted the event for the first time since 2003.

From Chad Corning:

One of the best stories from the IC Nationals this year was the third place finish of Pedro Lorson and Mimi Berry from Manhasset Bay YC. After 20+ years of trying this was their best finish ever. Longtime IC sailors Ted Scott and Sonya Smith (New Bedford YC) lost a tie break for fifth and class grand wizard Neal Fowler (Hyannis YC) sailing with Rob Hitchcock came eighth. It was a great event – thanks to all the teams that made the trip.
