Re: [The Publisher] Anniversaries in 2007 [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

A debate is raging in The Curmudgeon's email box this morning as to whether Gosling Brothers is 150 years old, or 200 years old. From the story below - which is copied from their website - it looks like there are two milestone dates that are 49 years apart. However, based on their information, the business known as 'Gosling Brothers' is 150 years old:

Our History

The history of Black Seal Rum® and the Gosling family began long ago. In the spring of 1806 James Gosling, the oldest son of William Gosling, wine and spirits merchant, set out from England on the ship, Mercury, with £10,000 of merchandise, bound for America.

After ninety-one desperate days on a becalmed sea their charter ran out, and they put in at the nearest port, St. George’s, Bermuda. Rather than pressing on for America, James opened a shop on the King’s Parade, St. George’s in December 1806.

In 1824 James returned to England and his brother Ambrose rented a shop on Front Street in the new Capitol of Hamilton for £25 a year. The Gosling’s have maintained a store at this location for 127 years.

In 1857 the firm was renamed Gosling Brothers by Ambrose’s sons. Three years later the first oak barrels of rum distillate arrived in Bermuda. Three years later, after much trial and error, the distinctive Bermuda black rum destined to be Black Seal was formulated and offered for sale. They didn’t call it Black Seal at first. In fact, up until the First World War it was only sold from the barrel, and most folks brought in their own bottles for a “fill up”. Eventually the black rum was sold in champagne bottles, reclaimed from the British Officer’s Mess, and the corks sealed with black sealing wax.

Pretty soon people began to ask for the “Black Seal”. Many years later the idea of the little, barrel juggling “Black Seal” was born.

Over the years Black Seal has become synonymous with Bermuda. It is the essential additive to Bermuda fish chowder, adds the island touch to Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the tempest in Bermuda’s favorite cocktail – the Dark ‘n Stormy®.

A family business for nearly 200 years Gosling’s is today the only company that blends and bottles in Bermuda, and is the largest exporter of a Bermuda made product.

Pyacht.com went live in August of 1997, so we'll be officially 10 in August 2007.

The idea for the Company hatched on the road trip home from the 1997 Miami OCR, and I got right to work on the website when I arrived back home. That means I've been doing this for almost 10 years to the day!

Congrats to Tom & Craig...

I guess the debate has ended with regard to how long Goslings Brothers has been in business. The final interpretation deserves to come from the family, wherein Malcolm Gosling has sent us the following email:

Hello Editor,

On behalf of the management and staff of Gosling Brothers Limited, thank you for mentioning us in your Anniversary section of the January 24, 2007 newsletter.

I respectfully bring to your attention that Gosling's actually celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2006. Gosling's is Bermuda's oldest business house and now under the management of the seventh generation of the Gosling family.

Again, thank you for including Gosling's in the impressive list of anniversaries.

Best regards,

Malcolm Gosling

Porto Cervo, Italy -- Celebrating a milestone in 2007, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) will mark the 40th anniversary of its founding with rallies, regattas and exclusive social events that will bring together the sailors, boats and organizers that have shaped the history of this jewel in the crown of Porto Cervo.

The festivities will commence with a formal dinner on May 12, 2007, 40 years to the day that His Highness the Aga Khan, along with Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, founded the not-for-profit association with the aim of uniting sailing enthusiasts and promoting the sport. The Club has remained true to those ideals, not only establishing a string of internationally renowned regattas but also achieving sporting history. Since the very first regatta organized by the Club – the Settimana delle Bocche in 1972 – YCCS has hosted World and European Championships for numerous one-design classes including the Optimist, Star, International 12-Metre, J/24, and Farr 40, while creating signature events such as the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Rolex Swan Cup and Sardinia Rolex Cup, all of which have demonstrated the Club’s commitment to excellence in race management combined with its unparalleled level of hospitality. YCCS can also lay claim to a special place in Italian and international sailing history achieved with the launch of Azzurra – flagship of the first-ever Italian America’s Cup Challenge in 1983 – and the subsequent invitation to act as the 1987 Challenger of Record in Fremantle, Australia. In 1992 the YCCS motor yacht Destriero brought the Blue Riband Award to Italy for the fastest transatlantic crossing record. The forward thinking sailors, designers, engineers and organizers who contributed to all of these historic achievements will participate in the festivities throughout 2007.

While further anniversary celebrations will take place for Yacht Club Members during August, September holds the real treat for sailing enthusiasts as Porto Cervo welcomes a “Festival of Sailing” in the form of the YCCS 40th Anniversary Regatta. Strategically scheduled between the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (September 2-8) and the Rolex Veteran Boat Rally (September 12-15), the YCCS 40th Anniversary Regatta will take place on September 10 and will play host not only to some of the largest sailing yachts in the world from the Maxis and the stunning fleet of Veteran boats, but also to historic America’s Cup International 12 Metres alongside high-tech racers from the current America’s Cup challenge. The regatta will consist of one coastal race with the fleet – 70-80 boats are anticipated – divided into divisions. Continuing a favorite, long-standing YCCS tradition, the day’s sailing will be capped by an impressive Crew Party to be held in the evening on the Piazza Azzurra overlooking Porto Cervo Marina.

The YCCS 40th Anniversary Regatta will be open to all sailing yachts and interested parties are encouraged to contact the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda for further details. For additional information, please visit www.yccs.it

The Mills Trophy Race, one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing
contests on the Great Lakes, will observe its 100th birthday on June 8.
Toledo was a mere 54 years old when local industrialist Merrill B. Mills
gave the Toledo Yacht Club the famous trophy - an elaborate gold-lined
silver bowl - as the prize for a test of navigation and night sailing. Since
then, the race has been run 83 times. -- The Blade, full story:

Sent to the Scuttlebutt editors from Harken:

Our 40th anniversary is coming up and to celebrate we updated our Harken history with funny stories and pics of the goings on around here. It’s on our default page. We also have a new Blog site and would love to post stories from our sailor friends.

Like the Fly Swatter story. About 10 years ago, We had Harken Fly Swatters made up for the Mac Race. One was returned broken, with flies stuck all over it from an ‘extremely disappointed customer’ who said he had always thought highly of Harken products, but was really disappointed and angry about the flyswatter which had only lasted a few swats. Upset, our swatter idea man brought it to the manager’s meeting looking for a way to mollify the irate customer. Of course, it was a set up. And maybe the response was too!

For a list of Harken milestones, and to post a comment, go to http://www.harken.com/default.php
