I think Murrelet would be a shoo-in for this, except the shipping costs will hurt.

If you divided the planet into quarters and set out to sail around the world, this would be the leg you wish you didn't have to sail to get home!

You must be kidding...

Have you ever been to the Red Sea? I have and don't ever care to go again. I thought this thread was an attempt at a joke, but I'm afraid they're serious.

I'd rather stand in the shower and pour sand over my head.

To all the cynical sailors
Yes we did the Rally to the Red Sea in March 2005 and as a results of it's success we decided to turn it into an annual rally.
I invite you to visit our website and look at sailors articles from the 2005 Med Red Rally and the photo gallery. No doubt it will wet your appetite

Beg to differ. The red Sea is interesting but the unmarked reefs, oil rigs, hostile coastline, corruption in Suez and the like don't make this the idealic cruising grounds you are trying to make them out to be.

This is the reason why do it as part of the rally. The area is so so beautiful and we have sailors who have been sailing the area for years. We give participants very details sailing instructions every evening for the next day route, including location of oil riggs and reefs on the map/

Reefs on a "map"? I didn't realize that there were reefs on land. That aside, the grandaddy of running rallies, Jimmy Cornell, found out the hard way that rallies don't make your trip any safer. In fact one might submit that it allows the unqualified to participate in an environment of false security. The exact types of sailors you will attract are the least qualified to make such a journey. These participants will expect a level coddling that you can't possibly provide. Is it your intention to attempt to provide the necessary security to protect your participants?

During Mr. Cornell's inaugural round the world rally, Europa '92, there we numerous incidents that were well out of his control. If memory serves in regards to that event, they lost one life, lost one vessel to grounding, had numerous injuries, crew being detained by immigration officials for reasons unclear, at least a half a dozen pirate altercations plus a vessel and her crew seized by Somalian terrorists. The later nearly turning into an international incident to procure the release of said vessel and crew. Further the scheduled layover in Sudan was canceled and upon finishing of that leg from Sri Lanka, participants were instructed to head directly to The Suez Canal as their security could not be guaranteed. In retrospect, Jimmy probably would have been well advised to send the fleet to Cape Town and brought them back to the Med via The Cape of Good Hope and up the West Coast of Africa.

That said, what contingency plans do you have in place in the event of an escalation of political unrest or in the event of war? How will you deal with any of the above circumstances World Cruising encountered as listed above? What degree of personal responsibility are you willing to assume to insure the safe passage of those who contrat you to "hold their hands"?

Here is a relevant article about a recent attack on a cruise ship off of Somolia as reported by the BBC.

Just to let you know that the Med Red Rally is not going to Somalia.
It goes only as far south as Hurghada , than Sharm-El-Sheikh and back to the Med.

Thanks for that. Could you kindly address some of my questions and concerns from my earlier post?
