PT- Summer Sailing Director at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

The Stonington Harbor Yacht Club (SHYC) is located on the Southeastern shore of Connecticut along Fisher’s Island Sound, at the mouth of the Stonington Harbor. SHYC’s fleet includes: (7) Optimists, and (3) 420s. SHYC also offers occasional adult sailing instruction aboard our fleet of (6) Ideal 18s. Our fleet of motorboats include an 18’ Dauntless Whaler, 18’ Key West, and a small RIB.
In 2018 we partnered with neighboring NESS (New England Science & Sailing) to run our Junior Sailing Programs. After a successful partnership last year, we will continue with that program in 2019.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
-Seasonal position, primarily half-day working hours, generally from 1 PM to 5 PM. This is a minimum part-time position with opportunities to work additional hours, mostly weekdays with some evenings and weekends as needed.
-Act as the staff liaison with NESS, helping families with enrollment, encouraging participation in programs and regattas, providing feedback to families.
-One-on-one sailing instruction for both children and adults, including coaching for Wednesday Night Harbor Racing, Junior Regattas, Ideal 18 Certification and Instruction.
-Encourage new member families to get out on the water, increasing usage of our Ideal 18 fleet
-Organize and promote at least 2 summer club sailing events targeting families. e.g., fun race with dock-side starts, a leg sailing backwards, build a craft out of duct tape and cardboard, etc.
-Manage, train and schedule dockhands.
-Manage power fleet (fueling, wash down, routine maintenance, etc.) as well as the Ideal 18 sailboat fleet.
-Provide weekly report of activities and upcoming objectives.
-Report to SHYC General manager.
Qualifications: US Sailing Certification. Level 1 (minimum), Level 2 preferred.
