what's up with just three full legs in the AC finals??
and only one upwind?
Surely with the racing a close as it is... and with lead changes such as in race 8... another windward/leeward lap is warranted. They're getting around the course in under 25min. there's plenty of time to extend the races and still get in two per day.
It's finally exciting. And in everyone's interest - except perhaps the Kiwis' - to extend the event.

Agreed. But I expect it's the media networks that have asked for the compressed format. LVC races were 7 legs, so not sure why the AC finals are only 5 legs.

no doubt the TV folks held sway on the short course format. But it's a specious stance. NBC Sports Channel is dedicating 2 & 1/2 hours to today's racing. plenty of time to accommodate two 7 leg races and all the replays, analysis and commentary they want. Everyone lost sight of the fact that the upwind legs almost always deliver the greatest opportunity for gains, shifts and turnabouts. In other words: more action. Short course = short sighted. ( besides there could always be a provision to call a race early if one boat is X minutes ahead.) Next time!
