Problems for Sydney-Hobart Race Log-In to Post/Reply

Rolex and CYCA are at loggerheads.

It's emerged that ROLEX has threatened to withdraw their sponsorship of the Sydney to Hobart. Rolex is very unhappy about a number of safety lapses which occurred in this year’s race, the most blatant being the incident surrounding Hugo Boss and its failed safety inspection. Apparently the CYCA’s safety inspector refused to sign off on Hugo Boss, even though it was rated Cat 0 (it failed to meet the clubs requirements re placement of port and starboard lights on the bow amongst other things).

Racing SUPREMO Roger Hickman stepped in and signed the certificate himself, even though he is not authorized to do so. Club Directors and members are seething as this may have made the club and its board liable if Hugo Boss had had troubles or been lost.

Apparently Rear Commodore Hickman is not unknown to brush over previous safety issue, having helped Grant Warrington out in the past. This issue however may sink Hickmans chances of remaining on the CYCA board.

So are Rolex concerned that the safety process was bypassed or that a high-profile entrant was nearly forced out of the race over a technicality?
