Red Bull Youth America's Cup - Monthly update Log-In to Post/Reply

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is a new event under the umbrella of the America’s Cup and is intended to afford young, talented sailors a clear pathway towards competing for one of the most prestigious trophies in sport – the America’s Cup.

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is scheduled Sept. 1-4, 2013, in San Francisco, during the break between the start of the 2013 America’s Cup Finals and the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

In years past youth sailors have had a difficult task ascending the hierarchy of an America’s Cup team. Youth sailors simply weren’t viewed as having enough experience to compete at the high level demanded by America’s Cup crews. The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup aims to change that.
The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is open to national teams of six sailors, aged 19 to 24 in 2013. Each crew must hold a valid passport of the country their team represents. Equipment, including the AC45 platform and wing sail – the same as used in the America’s Cup World Series – will be supplied to participating teams.

Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Teams
Australia - Objective Australia
France - Energy Team/Name TBC
Germany - STG/NRV Youth Team
New Zealand - Emirates Team New Zealand/Name TBC
New Zealand - Full Metal Jacket
Portugal - ROFF Cascais Sailing Team
Sweden - Artemis Racing/Swedish Youth Challenge

MARCH UPDATE

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is a new event under the umbrella of the America’s Cup Event Authority, to be held in San Francisco during the break between the start of the 2013 America’s Cup Finals and the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Sept. 1-4, 2013).

Among the ten international teams that will be participating, Scuttlebutt intends to provide a monthly update for the two North American teams selected to compete. Here's what they are up to in March:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
We’re launching into our first month of concentrated on-the water training, with our biggest week to be the training sessions onboard Oracle Team USA’s AC45 mid-month. We’ll be on the water for three days with daily briefings and after practice debriefs with Oracle Team USA coaches and sailors. This practical help with speed and maneuvers was invaluable when we did the US Trials in November and we look forward to getting more hard information in this cycle.

We’ve also secured our training boat for when we aren’t on the AC45. We’ll be practicing on the SL33 Bridge Runner. This boat was designed specifically as a scaled down AC45 so what we learn on this boat will be directly applicable to the sailing we’ll be doing in the Youth America’s Cup. Our goal is to be out on the water three days a week, every week with our own coaching staff doing debriefs after each session.

We’ll be doing a lot of outreach during March. On March 6 to 8, we’ll be presenting the video we made of the US Trials at the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival’s Education program for more than 600 students. We’re also going to be starting up our work with the San Francisco Downtown High School’s boat building program for at risk youth. That should be challenging but rewarding. We’re also firming up our plans with Treasure Island Sailing Center for their summer community boating program for youth.

USA45 Racing (USA) -
March is a big month for USA45 Racing. Many of the team members are competing in the heat of their college sailing seasons, while Helmsman Charlie Buckingham and Grinder Matthew Whitehead train full time in the Olympic Laser and Nacra 17 catamaran, respectively.

The team will host its first fundraising event on March 12 at San Diego Yacht Club, where teammates Jake La Dow and Jake Reynolds will introduce the keynote speaker, Oracle team USA helmsman James Spithill! The night is designed to increase awareness and garner support for the team, as well as raise money for the campaign. A big thanks to Point Loma Outfitting for sponsoring the evening!

After the event in San Diego, the team will travel to San Francisco on March 14 to train in the AC 45’s out of Oracle’s base with local RBYAC team American Youth Sailing Force. It should be a great time to get back in the boats, and get the team all back in one place. One other big piece of news is the announcement of USA45 Racing’s coach. The team will be under the guidance of catamaran veteran and Olympic medalist Charlie Ogletree through to the competition in September! The team is excited for things to start ramping up for the big event.

APRIL UPDATE

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is a new event under the umbrella of the America’s Cup Event Authority, to be held in San Francisco during the break between the start of the 2013 America’s Cup Finals and the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Sept. 1-4, 2013).

Among the ten international teams that will be participating, Scuttlebutt intends to provide a monthly update for the two North American teams selected to compete. Here's what they are up to in April:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
After training on the AC45s in March, the team has launched a new website in April to share their experiences. Included are crew and shore team bios, news updates, video interviews with the crew, a revamped media link and a sponsorship page detailing how individuals and businesses can support their efforts.

The team will be active at Strictly Sail Pacific boat show (Apr 11-14) in Oakland, with team members showcasing the SL33 Bridge Runner catamaran they are using as a training platform for the AC45. On Friday, April 12, the team will be giving a talk on The Force in AC45’s, and will be providing information on their upcoming fundraising party at the Richmond Yacht Club May 16.

During the show, the team will be sailing two of Sunsail's charter boats with inner-city kids aboard, a program that the team hopes will expose more people to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. They will be out sailing with some of the kids from the Afterguard and Osprey programs based in Oakland and exploring the central bay with them.

----------------

USA45 Racing (USA) -
After the team's first AC45 practice session on San Francisco Bay March 15-17, the team better understands the large task ahead of us. Working with Oracle Team USA coach Darren Bundock, the team improved greatly and tested themselves in good breeze on the San Francisco Bay, reaching a top speed of 27kts downwind!

The team's first fundraiser on March 12th at the San Diego Yacht Club was a huge success as well, with over 250 people in attendance to meet the team and listen to keynote speaker and Oracle Team USA skipper Jim Spithill. Two more fundraisers are scheduled, back-to-back in Florida, at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, and the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club, home waters of John Wallace and Matthew Whitehead.

April is a busy month for the collegiate sailing circuit, but the team will have access to the AC45 again for training on May 10-12. This will also mark the first time having coach Charlie Ogletree onsite, past AC World Series skipper for the China Team. Practice and quality time on the water will be the key to success going forward.

MAY UPDATE

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is a new event under the umbrella of the America’s Cup Event Authority, to be held in San Francisco during the break between the start of the 2013 America’s Cup Finals and the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Sept. 1-4, 2013).

Among the ten international teams that will be participating, Scuttlebutt intends to provide a monthly update for the two North American teams selected to compete. Here's what they are up to in May:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
The American Youth Sailing Force (The Force) will be busy at work in the month of May. Among other things, we’ll be reaching out to youth, training on our SL33 catamaran, getting some time on the AC45 and fundraising.

The Treasure Island Sailing Center will be the focus of our community youth outreach in May. We’ll be teaming up with them for their summer sailing and racing classes. Team Manager, Ian Andrewes notes, “We’ll be spending time with them explaining our program, trying to encourage and motivate them to continue in the amazing sport of sailing.”

There is some dramatic news ahead regarding our rugged SL33 catamaran. “We’ve developed a set of foils for her and we’ll be flying in no time soon. This is the best platform for matching the performance and high physical demands of the AC45s, and we’ll be flying at about the same speed with the foils,” says team member Evan Sjostedt. This will provide the team with very helpful handling and boat speed skills, come September.

Although the SL33 is a remarkable platform for training, there is nothing better than the real thing. In May, “We’ll actually get to train on the AC45 we’ll be racing in the Red Bull America’s Cup.” According to Andrewes. “Understanding our boat’s speed parameters will be useful throughout the course in September.”

Beyond all the training and sailing we’ll be doing, there’s probably nothing more important than raising money to support this remarkable campaign. Sjostedt relates, “We have a lot of money to raise in the few months to come. We are really looking forward to our fundraising events at the Richmond Yacht Club in May and the Golden Gate Yacht Club in June.” This is an important time for us to get the message out.” The Force will be unveiling an exciting new feature on our Web site this May, providing greater interaction to our supporters than ever before. Stay tuned.

----------------

USA45 Racing (USA) -
USA45 Racing is getting closer and closer to the move out to San Francisco in early June.

The team is just wrapping up schoolwork and final exams so that focus can be devoted 100% to sailing. On May 10-12, the team will be sailing the AC 45’s in San Francisco for a final sailing session before full time training begins in June.

The team is excited to get back on the water as a group, but has been hard at work in other areas. On April 24, team members Nevin Snow, Jake La Dow, and John Wallace traveled to Tred Avon Yacht Club on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, to speak to the yacht club members about the excitement the summer will be bringing to USA45 Racing and to all sailing fans.

Another team fundraiser is planned for May 31 at St. Petersburg Yacht Club in Florida. Admission is free so we encourage any and all interested to show up ready for a fun and informative night. The following night, we are hosting another fundraiser at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club, nearby in Florida, kicking off the team’s summer!

JUNE UPDATE

With the summer winds arriving and the school year completed, activity for the two North American teams selected to compete in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will now be increasing. The teams are organized with sailors of 19-24 years, all holding passports for the country they represent (USA), and must train a group of six to compete in the event to be held September 1-4. Here is what they are up to in June:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
This weekend The Force will be practicing on the AC45, after which will be unavailable while it is being re-branded. Once this is completed the AC45 will be returned exclusively to the youth teams, but until then the team will be training on the SL33.

The Force has a schedule full of public outreach and sailing-related events throughout the Bay Area. The team will be Treasure Island Sailing Center on June 12 and 26, working with the youth sailors during their summer program. On June 19, The Force will be presenting at the San Francisco Yacht Club’s Speaker’s series, and then on June 21 the team is hosting a fundraising event at Golden Gate Yacht Club. The team will be active during the Summer Sailstice event on June 22, and will be helping with the StFYC’s Opti Heavy Weather Clinic on June 23.

At the end of the month, The Force takes part in supporting The Maritime Parks Association at their annual Gala, which raises money for, among other things, the Association’s youth sailing programs.

----------------

USA45 Racing (USA) -
College sailing season has wrapped up, with both Nevin Snow and Graham Landy earning All- American honors. The team members have now relocated to the Bay area, with USA45 Racing proud and fortunate to have a fantastic partnership with the City of Tiburon, the team’s official home for the summer of racing. USA45 Racing encourages visitors to check out Tiburon, where the team’s training compound stands.

The first day of sailing this month on the AC45 will be June 8 with ORACLE Team USA. Moving the entire team and operation up to the Bay Area will allow the team to maximize time together on and off the water, as well as in the gym. Since the AC45’s will be unavailable in June and July while they are branded for the main event, USA45 Racing has acquired an Extreme 40 which arrives on June 13.

When not training, the team is still actively fundraising to reach the targeted budget.

JULY UPDATE

With the summer winds arriving and the school year completed, activity for the two North American teams selected to compete in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup will now be increasing. The teams are organized with sailors of 19-24 years, all holding passports for the country they represent (USA), and must train a group of six to compete in the event to be held September 1-4. Here is what they are up to in July:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
The Force continues to train on the very high-performance SL33 this month. The SL33 is the most similar yacht to an AC45 and has proven to be a valuable time-on-the-water platform for The force’s training.

The National Maritime Historic Park at Hyde Street Pier continues to be a focus point of The Force’s youth outreach efforts. Team members will be taking part in various activities this month, including a sail on the historic Alma with student sailors.

We were very fortunate to have had Oracle Team USA’s training support until recently. We are pleased to be moving to a new gym in San Francisco. The force will be provided with professional personal trainers and doing daily workouts to maintain and increase the team’s physical strength.

On July 25 The Force will be hosting their third major fundraiser at the Oakland Yacht Club. This is another great opportunity to meet the team and hear firsthand what it is that makes them tick. The evening’s ticket gets you a complimentary dinner, drinks and you’ll hear the latest Cupdate. This is sure to be an entertaining evening for all.

AUGUST UPDATE

This is the final month of preparation for the two North American teams selected to compete in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. The teams are organized with sailors of 19-24 years, all holding passports for the country they represent (USA), and must train a group of six to compete in the event to be held September 1-4. Here is what they are up to in August:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
American Youth Sailing Force (USA) -
This is our final push before the racing and it looks like a busy month of training.

Most of the team has been in Newport, RI training on two Mastrom 32 catamarans with our new coach, Bill Ward. Bill is the sailing coach at Saint Mary's college in Maryland and will be returning with The Force to the Bay Area in early August.

Early August is also our last opportunity to fundraise and team members will be spreading the message and gathering support in their hometowns prior to training full-time before the September RBYAC.

West Marine, a supporting sponsor, will be working with The Force between August 1-7 with various in-store presentations. We are always grateful to West Marine for providing these opportunities for us to meet local sailing enthusiasts.

Beginning on August 8 all RBYAC teams will participate in the RBYAC registration and orientation program. This program lasts until August 12, and we eagerly await more details. Following this program, each team will be provided a "branded" AC45 and scheduled practices will commence on the South Bay two days at a time, followed by a day of boat maintenance. This schedule will continue until the 28th of the month.
