2012 North American Speed Sailing Project Invitational Log-In to Post/Reply

Martha's Vineyard, MA (October 15, 2012) - Today kicked off the 2012 North American Speed Sailing Championship Invitational, with 12 Kiteboarders and 1 Windsurfer arriving at Katama Bay just prior to sunrise to commence rigging and inspecting the course.

The windspeed was 17-20 knots coming from 210 degrees. At 0900, the Race Committee waved the green flag for a 1 hour heat. Initially the course was quite square with a True Wind Angle of 120 Degrees over the 250 Meter Course. But with excellent water texture the competitors were quickly averaging speeds over 35 knots and peaking over 41 knots.

It was Outright World Speed Record Holder Rob Douglas who maintained his dominance by posting the first bullet of the Event with an average speed of his two best runs equaling 37.47 knots. I was able to rig big on my 17 Meter kite and score a second place with an average of 36.91 knots.

It looks like Tuesday could produce a West wind at 20 knots which would move the course location to Cape Poge.

A live webcast of all the racing will start at 12 pm EDT.

October 16, 2012

Day 2 of the 2012 North American Speed Sailing Invitational started out with cloudy skies and gusty erratic winds. Race Committee made an 0800 announcement to wait for the frontal boundary to clear and the WNW Winds to build. Heat 2 of the series started at 1345 hrs with Winds from 310 Degrees at a velocity of 15 knots.

During the first 15 Minutes of the 60 minute heat there were a few gusts on the course which touched close to 18 Knots. Those who made the most of the few puffs were well rewarded. Christophe Prin-Guenon was well rewarded as he was able to utilize his rock solid stance and larger stature to post an average speed of his two best runs at 37.950. This marked a new day in the two year history of the NASSCI as it is the first time Rob Douglas has ever lost a Heat. Rob scored a third behind Christophe and Alex Aguera.

Heat 3 was a tough one the wind was oscillating through 298 degrees and 320 degrees. Being patient at the top of the course and waiting for the right shift and right puff was huge. When you were able to recognize the right combination and take advantage it paid. The wind started out at 16-18 Knots and but after the first 40 Minutes dropped off to 14 Knots. Brock Callen bounced back from a 6th in Heat 2 to place 2nd and Rob Douglas got back to his winning ways to post a 1st.

October 22: Three races today, with WNW winds ranging from 19-26 Knots. Course was very square for riders making it imperative that the proper kite size was picked and that you picked the right line down the course. In the end it was Rob Douglas and Damien Leroy on the larger slalom boards who took the day, with Rob setting the high speed of 42.492 knots. Although we did see the reemergence of former World Record Holder Alex Caizergues who took a big win. Brock Callen drops to 3rd after scoring an 8th in the last race of the day.
