September 29-30, 2012
At the end of September Long Island Sound came up with some of its traditional July weather as 34 Sonars struggled with light and remarkably shifty northerly zephyrs during the Long Island Sound Championships.
But the cream rises to the top even when the milk is a bit sour, and Colin Gordon led a tough fleet throughout with finishes of 1-1-5-1 2 and a final score of 10 . This was remarkable consistency in such squirrely conditions. Gordon, from Sachem’s Head, was guided through the bumps and potholes by tactician Bill Lynn of Marblehead . Lynn is a long-time Sonar hot shot and the crew also included Lynns’ son, Peter and sail maker Tom “TK” Kinney.
This all star team was followed by four-time North American Sonar champion and high ranking Soling sailor Peter Galloway from the host Noroton Yacht Club, with finishes of 3-3-3-4-5 for a score of 18. Hi s shipmates were Jim Linville, Paul Steinborn and sailmaker Ched Proctor.
Sonar class president Larry Ehrhardt from Marblehead took first in the final race- after the wind had finally switched to the south west and piped up to 12 – 15 knots - which boosted him to third overall with 30 points.
