Sailors Relish Personal Offshore Experience with Van Liew
Le Pingouin Summer Tour Ending Soon with Limited Spaces Open
August 11, 2011 - (Charleston, SC) Sailors often dream of taking the helm of a state of the art racing machine that has blasted through the Southern Ocean, circled the globe and won top honors. American sailor Brad Van Liew has been making those dreams a reality for a handful of sailors this summer. Following his hard fought win in the VELUX 5 Oceans race solo around the world, the Le Pingouin Summer Tour was launched, sending the bright yellow carbon fiber sled on a victory lap to Newport, New York, Boston, Bermuda and Charleston. Leaving New York this morning under sunny skies, Van Liew pointed the bow toward Boston, where he will continue offering experiences onboard ranging from day sails to overnight offshore transits.
Charleston sailor Guy Mossman joined Van Liew for a one-on-one experience offshore sailing from Charleston to Newport earlier this summer.
"Wow is the only way to say it! I had an awesome run up to Newport on Le Pingouin with Brad," said Mossman, an experienced sailor and CEO of Orbis Inc. "The boat is an incredible machine. I was lucky to see every point of sail including the big kite and a good variety of wind conditions. It is impressive to be reaching along at speeds of 22+ knots in the same amount of wind speed!"
While Mossman was hugely impressed with the speed and seaworthiness of Le Pingouin, the comfort factor was a bit of a stretch. The boat is built for speed, leaving an absence of comforts common in cruising boats or even standard race boats. The environment can be intense and Van Liew vets each prospective sailor before heading offshore. Although the day sails offer a mellower environment allowing families or groups of friends to participate onboard for a couple hours, the offshore sailing is creating quite an impact. The enthusiasm of some participants is contagious, which is fine by Van Liew as there is still space on some of the upcoming passages.
Shana Bagley is a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California and an experienced offshore sailor preparing to join Van Liew and others onboard the boat from Newport to Bermuda.
"I am looking forward to improving my sailing skills, pushing my limits, seeing the brilliant stars from the middle of the ocean, and to spending time with an accomplished and respected solo racer. No deadlines, no ringing phones, just the elements and the sounds of the boat racing through the water. It just doesn't get much better than that, really. NASA's Space Shuttle Program may be shut down, but rockets are still firing full blast on Le Pinguoin! Lucky for me, I have a ticket to ride."
Now that Van Liew has proven himself as America's undisputed #1 extreme solo sailor, he welcomes the opportunity to share the extreme nature of ocean racing with others.
