Yacht Club House Drinks Log-In to Post/Reply

Sailing has its traditions, and for better or worse, the adult beverages is one of them. At some yacht clubs, this tradition goes so far as a designated house drink. Scuttlebutt sought a list of what these house drinks were, and used the all powerful Facebook to do so. Here is what has been learned so far:

Larchmont YC (Larchmont, NY) - Montesano Cooler
Seawanhaka Corinthian YC (Oyster Bay, NY) - Southside
Indian Harbor YC (Greenwich, CT) - Black Top
Bay Head YC (Bay Head, NJ) - Steak Knife
St. Francis YC (San Francisco, CA) - Sloe Gin Fizz CORRECTION: Ramos Fizz
Bayview YC (Detroit, MI) - Hummer
Madison Beach Club (Madison, CT) - Lightning
Monterey Peninsula YC (Monterey, CA) - MOP (Myers OJ and Pineapple)
Southern YC (New Orleans, LA) - Red Drink (aka Planterís Punch)
Eastport YC (Annapolis, MD) - Juanita's Margarita
American YC (Rye, NY) - Planter's Punch,
Rochester YC (Rochester, NY) - Wedge
Royal Burnham YC (Essex, UK) - Max's Special
YCís along the Gulf Coast - Bushwacker

Can you add to this list?

- Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt

The Boston Yacht Club has the Three Bean Soup served hot or cold. It is sambuca with three coffee beans and a vanilla stick. Served cold the Sambuca is chilled and served straight up with three coffee beans. Served hot, sambuca with three beans and a match to create a flaming delight. Thank you, Philip E. DiCarlo

Our club tradition is that we don't have a bar. We're out sailing.

I am stunned that Chicago Yacht Clubbers did not offer up the Thunderhead...the lore offers the Pink Pony on Mackinac Island as the originator and many racers crave one upon finishing the Chicago-Mac race...upon my last visit to CYC two weeks back, the lunch time bartender at Monroe Street carried on the technique of pouring the Myers Dark gently so it remained at the top of the blended Tom Collins...when you drink it through a straw, the final sips are a full on thunderhead of rum...

From Bob Brenac

Anyone - but anyone - who has finished a Sydney Hobart Race MUST have quaffed a few "Mutton Bird Repellents". Ultra-famous CYCA 'apres race' (or sometimes, during race) tippler.

At South Beach YC in SF, after a search that even included a contest last year, we've popularized the Geoff Daw (or simply "A Daw") in honor of a beloved member who died of cancer a bit more than a week ago. The Daw is a Bombay Sapphire and tonic, lime, and a float of Sapphire on the top. Appropriate enough as our burgee is nearly a sapphire blue. At Geoff's 8-bells celebration on Saturday, "gimme a Daw" rang out and we went through nearly a dozen large bottles of his favored gin.

We also enjoy a Herbie on the Rocks with our friends from the Bay Area of Disabled Sailors. Herb Meyer does not have use of his legs and only limited use of an arm, but that doesn't stop him from sailing. One day, he got caught on the wrong side of current and wind, and he ended up on the rocks near the St. Francis Yacht Club (he's a member there, along with BAADS where he's past commodore and a member of the SBYC board). To revive his spirits, he tossed back what became known as a Herbie on the Rocks. I'll have to check on the mixer, but it involves Meyer's Rum and, of course, rocks.

Starting back in the late 50's, West Coast sailing great Jake Wosser started a trend at the San Francisco Yacht Club (Belvedere, CA), with his favorite drink named the "Spooli-Oooli". A simple concoxion...vodka and orange juice.

The "Spooli-Oooli" is still served at the bar in fond memory of one of the greatest sailors in West Coast history.

Hello and Cheers!

My name is Juanita Hopkins and I am the bartender/bar manager at the Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis.

While my margaritas have slayed many a liver, my Rum Punch is our other equally if not more popular signature drink at EYC that is becoming world reknown. EYC hosts a plethara of regattas every year and I have been there 13 years.

In the winter months, for the Frostbite series on Sundays, I make 2 hot drinks: The Kitchen Sink Coffee (everything but the kitchen sink is in it) and The Chocolate Bomb (fondly known as the Chocolate Boom Boom).

I can divulge recipes if you would like.

Many thanks for your great publication!! (PS - I am also an attorney with a bartending habit)!

Juanita

As a former member of Chicago Yacht Club, I always heard that the credit for the Thunderhead belonged to Nick Romero, who held various positions in a long career at the club, before eventually opening his own establishment. If he didn't create it, he certainly made the definitive version. What is served now at CYC as a "thunderhead" bears but a faint resemblance.
