RECREATION PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one Recreation Program Director (Selective Certification - Boating & Science) vacancy within Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development. Incumbents provide leadership for community-based recreational programs and activities and assist in the management of a recreation facility or city-wide program. The current position will oversee the City's boating centers and candidates must have the experience and skills necessary to safely operate a wide variety of boats and teach boating skills and science curriculum to youth and adults and teach boating and science instruction skills to staff. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of specialized boating and science activities and sailing/operating small outboard-driven motorboats, pontoon boats and human powered boating (kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, dragon-boats, whale boats and rowboats).
Requires graduation from college with a Bachelor's degree in recreation or a related field, one year of paid or volunteer experience in one or more areas of recreation programming or a related field, and one year of demonstrated experience coordinating, facilitating and managing specialized boating and science programs and activities. U.S. Sailing or ASA Sailing Instructor, Safe Powerboating, ACA Kayak or Canoe Instructor or Trip Leader certifications are highly desirable. Must have knowledge of specialized boating and science activities and sailing/operating small outboard-driven motorboats, pontoon boats and human powered boating (kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, dragon-boats, whale boats and rowboats), along with the ability to lead and engage students in recreational boating activities utilizing an experiential education curriculum outdoors and in the classroom. Must be able to obtain a State of California For Hire Vessel Operators License within 6 months from date of hire. Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required.
