APPLICATIONS FOR BERTHS AND ANCHORAGES IN WEYMOUTH HARBOUR NOW OPEN

Applications for booking visitor berthing in Weymouth and anchorage in Weymouth Bay during the sailing events of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are now open. All berths and anchorages between 16 July and 9 September 2012 must be pre booked. To avoid disappointment please book early.

The first phase of applications were open until 12 December 2012. There has been a good response and all those customers who have been allocated a berth, have until 5 February 2012, to confirm their booking. All requests for bookings now received are being held and will be allocated after 5 February with an aim to confirm no later than 1 March those who have been successful at securing a berth.

Over the last 18 months the Weymouth Harbour team has been working hard to ensure that boat owners who come to Weymouth & Portland in summer 2012 enjoy the unique experience of visiting the waters around the Olympic sailing events.

There will be plenty going on during the summer of 2012, including the free ‘Live Site’ on Weymouth Beach, where the sailing and other Olympic sporting events will be screened, the Weymouth Bayside Festival, which will host exhibitions; Dorset products, catering and entertainment, together with a 12 week programme of local cultural events called the ‘Maritime Mix’; part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Festival.

Peter Mole Weymouth Harbour Master, said: “We can start to share the excitement and feeling of anticipation with those who will be joining us for this once in a lifetime experience. Improvements are being made to services around the harbour, including new showers, extra pontoons, pump out facilities, Wi-Fi and a water taxi serving the 2012 anchorages out in the Bay.

“The Weymouth Harbour team look forward to welcoming boating visitors to view the Olympic races taking place in some of the finest sailing waters in the world with the beautiful backdrop of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. However all prospective visitors need to be aware that there will be restrictions during Games times and that for capacity and security reasons, all berthing and moorings in the harbour must be pre-booked.”

Notes to Editors
It will not be possible for visiting boats to enter Weymouth & Portland Harbours and expect to be accommodated during Games time without pre booking their berth or anchorage. It is essential therefore that bookings are made in advance, as it is expected that all available berths and anchorages will be fully booked, well before the start of the Olympic Games.

Weymouth and Portland Harbours will still be accessible at all times during the Games, via a dedicated channel and will continue to operate as working harbours for ferry services to the Channel Islands, commercial shipping, fishing, diving and other recreational water based activities. There will however be restrictions on the waters within Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour where the race areas are located, (known as the field of Play) during race times themselves.

Olympic sailing will take place between 28 July and 12 August 2012

Paralympic sailing will take place between 29 August – 6 September 2012

Expressions Of Interest Invited For Weymouth & Portland Non-Accredited Media Centre During The Olympic And Paralympic Games

As part of the preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games sailing events which are based at Weymouth & Portland in Dorset, Expressions of Interest are invited for the Non-Accredited Media Centre which will operate during the Games.

The waters of Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will play host to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games' sailing events. The ambition is to 'deliver the most memorable sailing experience in the history of the Games'. Facilities will include a free Live Screen on Weymouth's famous beach as well as a Festival Area where visitors will enjoy the best Dorset has to offer in terms of entertainment and food and drink. These are the first Olympic events to take place within the shadow of a UNESCO natural World Heritage Site - Dorset is home to The Jurassic Coast, boasting an unparalleled geological profile.

A new online media centre has recently been set up at www.dorsetforyou.com/london2012/mediacentre. The focus of the online resource will be Weymouth & Portland's preparations for the events but will also include general points of interest about Dorset, such as tourism highlights and suggested itineraries. As well as information and fact sheets, images and film footage will be available to download. All this will be progressively uploaded over the current months.

Currently on the site, there is an Expression of Interest form for those wanting to have access to the Non-Accredited Media Centre (NAMC) which Weymouth & Portland 2012 Operations team will be organising during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The NAMC will be located at the Pavilion, at the western end of Weymouth beach. Facilities will include desks, broadband plug-in, printers, and fax machines. There will also be a media platform giving good views across Weymouth beach; access to this will be via a booking system. The Media Centre is also likely to be open when the Torch Relay is in Weymouth (to be confirmed). Entry and use of the facilities will be free of charge for those registered.

For further information, please go to www.dorsetforyou.com/london2012/mediacentre
