The bulk of advertising revenue for Scuttlebutt comes from the newsletter text ads. But the supply of ad slots is limited, and when they are gone... they’re gone. Ad sales this year have been phenomenal, with only one text ad space remaining for 2011. We plan to donate this slot to a business or organization eager to promote something to the Scuttlebutt readership. Would you like a free ad? Details here:
  • Ad slot will be in the August 26, 2011 edition of the Scuttlebutt newsletter.
  • Entrants cannot be a current or past Scuttlebutt advertising client.
  • Entrants must list the name of their business or organization, include their website address, and briefly explain (in no more than 20 words) what they intend to promote in the ad. Entry information must be posted in this forum thread.
  • Winning entrant must agree to standard advertising terms.
  • Entry deadline is June 28, 2011 (Pacific Time). A random drawing for the ad slot will be held on June 29, 2011.

If you grew up around the water in the mid-1900’s, chances are you sailed a Snipe. This small one design sailboat took off when its plans appeared in Rudder magazine in 1930 and by the end of the 1950’s more than 20,000 of them had been built. The Serious Sailing, Serious Fun: Traditions Build Winners documentary explores how the Snipe earned its reputation as a family boat that people of all ages could sail and one that valued competition more than winning.

As the Snipe Class turns 80 in 2011, it’s facing the most serious challenge to its existence it’s ever faced. Those who started sailing in the 1940’s and 50’s are aging out of the boat. The younger sailors are looking for something faster and a lot flashier. The Class that has depended on its traditions of combining Serious Sailing with Serious Fun to draw in new blood, may not survive in today’s fast paced society.

With just pick up shooting left to do, We are starting to edit the story we’ve captured and it's looking strong. We still need to raise additional money to finish the editing and we will be starting another round of fundraising using Kickstarter in September. The ad space will give us a great start to reach our goal.

The documentary project is produced and directed by Vincent Casalaina for Image Integration. You can see the interview highlights and regatta videos at our YouTube channel.
