Mackay Boats now building the International 420.

Auckland, NZL (October 2011) Mackay Boats are excited to announce the addition of the International 420 to the list of boats being built at their Silverdale factory in Auckland New Zealand.
The International 420 is Mackay Boats 2nd junior class adding to the locally designed single handed Starling.
These 2 junior classes are built alongside the hugely successful Olympic Mackay 470’s and 49ers.
The Mackay 470 has enjoyed huge success over recent years with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals going to crews sailing a Mackay 470 at the last 2 Olympic Games and all of the top 10 men sailed Mackay 470’s at the 2010 World Championships.
The new 420 hull is built using the same construction methods as the 470 and was drawn by local naval architect Kevin Trotter keeping the same concepts that make the Mackay 470 the dominant boat in that highly competitive Olympic class.
Sailors report that the new Mackay 420 looks and feels a lot like the larger 470 and the renowned Mackay construction is sure to make these boats that perform at the top of the fleet for a very long time!
Jonny McGovern was one of the first 420 coaches to see our first boat in Europe in mid 2011
“I have just returned home from a month away coaching 420's. I was out at the 420 Europeans in Tavira where your 1st boat … was being sailed. I had a chance to have a sail in it on a couple of the training days, as I was very keen to see how she felt. I was amazed with how good the boat felt (well not that amazed after sailing the Mackay 470 for a few years and experiencing the quality of those). The rudder response was very accurate and the steering felt very light even in 15knts and steep waves which 420's are not renowned for being light and responsive. Also the feel on the bow was that it never drop down the mine as we call it and always feel up and lively which was also a nice surprise. All in all I was a big fan of the boat and wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing the Mackay topping the scoresheet at regattas to come.” Jonny McGovern GBR 420 coach.
