MEDIA RELEASE 18th July 2011 Versatile day racer with a difference - Alia 65 Harbour Racer A new versatile lightweight carbon mini maxi designed for short-handed afternoon racing, competitive regatta entry and comfortable overnight cruising is set to revolutionise the traditional day racer concept. A first time collaboration between the Turkish composite yacht builder Alia Yachts, USA based Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design and Australian David Sampson’s Tower Marine Management has seen the development of the Alia 65 Harbour Racer. The lightweight carbon structure designed by Reichel/Pugh’s in-house composite engineers is plan approved by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to meet the ISAF OSR Plan Review scantling requirements for Cat 1 Racing. Coupled with a hull and foil package to match a modern mini maxi the performance will be similar, but rather than the 18 strong crew required to campaign a traditional pocket maxi, the Alia 65 can be easily handled by a minimal race crew and for cruising, just two to three people. “We are delivering a yacht with multiple personalities” says David Sampson, director of Tower Marine Management. “We haven’t compromised the performance of the yacht by adding a heavy interior or complex systems, but instead have made the boat as fast as possible with just a little comfort and superb styling. “The user friendly cockpit is comfortable for cruising as well as racing and features a unique retractable bar in the cockpit floor for a drink after sailing. The interior is simple with a small salon, forward cabin and ensuite for an overnight stay. “Our real motivation is to build and sell these boats in pairs so two fellow yacht club members can race each other in one-design boats on a sunny afternoon in Sydney Harbour, Sardinia or San Francisco Bay. “The ability to participate in IRC regattas such as the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup or Audi Hamilton Island Race Week and be competitive will appeal to prospective owners who enjoy fleet racing with a trophy at the finish,” added Sampson. Jim Pugh of Reichel Pugh Yacht Design commented on the design team’s approach to the modern harbour racer concept; “Modern clean lines and deck geometry complemented by elegant teak on the cockpit floor and deck along with a pure performance driven hull shape, appendages and sail plan that do not compromise the handling characteristics of the yacht have been the main focus of the design team. “Combined with state-of-the-art engineering by the Reichel/Pugh team the end result is a yacht that will be visually stunning and a pleasure to sail both when racing shorthanded or with a full crew, and while anchored and entertaining guests or cruising with family and friends. “The Alia 65 Harbour Racer will provide her owners with the perfect balance of luxury, comfort and performance. “This exciting new design is a day racer with a difference,” Sampson concludes.
