Introducing SCR 35 - Hall Seamless Carbon Rigging Log-In to Post

Hall seamless carbon masts now have the perfect complement -Seamless Carbon Rigging. Sleek, strong, and stylish, SCR 35 is unprecedented in standing rigging efficiency.

The significant characteristics are SCR 35’s compact end fittings and smooth outer surface.

Working with rigging products already on the market, we were reminded of our early experience making carbon-fiber spinnaker poles. At the time we bemoaned the fact that the tube was so light and the end fittings were so heavy. So we developed our own super-light, compact end fitting with superior strength to complement the benefits of the carbon pole.

We experienced the same feeling about the end fittings on existing composite products. The fittings are much larger and heavier than the fittings for equivalent Nitronic 50 metal rod. Existing composite products have ungainly lollipop-like fittings hanging at each tang and spreader. Even if attached internally, these fittings require tangs and exit holes that are unacceptably large.

In addition, existing products are larger in diameter than equivalent Nitronic 50 rod. The surfaces of other composite rigging products, with their braided covers, are rough and instinctively call into question shroud drag.

Even though we participated in testing of some concepts early on – most notably we did initial testing on what eventually became C-6 – nothing really meshed with our philosophy of building things the “best way.” We researched many different ideas, some of which passed our tests conceptually, but ultimately presented problems.

A Hall carbon rigging product had to be much better or not at all.

Then it became clear that we already possessed the key to developing a breakthrough product – seamless carbon construction. The concept was clear, the execution less obvious. Along the way, persistence led to a final design and manufacturing process and ultimately yielded an original and intriguing product. Both fitting design and manufacturing process are so unique that we’ve applied for international patents for both.

Hall standards for composite rigging are:

• SCR 35 uses the same autoclave-cured carbon that gives incredible longevity and UV resistance to our seamless spars.
• Smooth, seamless (solid) low drag carbon surface.
• Smallest frontal area possible.
• Ultra light Nitronic 50 - size end fittings.
• Superior static and fatigue strength.
• Ability to pass all German Lloyd composite rigging test criteria. (German Lloyd, a ship classification society, also classifies large yachts to insure sound structures. G-L certification of a large yacht is a requirement of many insurers.)

We achieved all of our goals with SCR 35. Billiard ball smooth SCR 35 rigging is the smallest diameter composite rigging available. Our super-light end fittings fit most Nitronic 50 tangs and spreader fittings. The strength of our stays consistently averages 50% stronger than Nitronic 50 tests – even after German Lloyd’s tough 100,000 cycle fatigue tests. It also routinely passes G-L’s mandated impact tests. SCR 35 has been comprehensively tested with more than 100 static, fatigue, and impact tests recorded.

In addition to its revolutionary qualities, SCR 35 is a very practical standing rigging product. For instance, a big bonus is the ability of the rigging to be easily coiled. Although not as soft as PBO it can be coiled in smaller diameters than are factory-specified for Navtec Nitronic 50.

SCR 35 has a unique styling benefit as well. It can be coated in the same color as your Hall seamless mast. We’ve shown SCR 35 in clear-coat (above) but it also looks great in color.

Hall is gearing up for production and will deliver SCR 35 rigging sets for small- to medium-sized boats in Spring 2009, with deliveries for larger yachts toward mid-Fall 2009.
