Newport Beach, CA (Oct. 29, 2008) - With just under five months to go before racing begins, eleven boats have already applied for entry to the Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s 2009 Cabo Race. Created in 1971, the Cabo Race is an 800-mile international regatta from Newport Beach, California to Cabo San Lucas, BCS, Mexico. Most of this year’s early entrants experienced veterans, having competed most recently in the 2005 and 2007 versions of the classic biennial race. The scrappy Santa Cruz 50 fleet is once again making a strong showing, including Rocket, Fortaleza, Horizon, and Adrenalin. Robert Lane will also be returning to compete on his powerful Medicine Man, as will Jim Madden, who will be driving the newest iteration of Stark RavingMad. Meanwhile, the Pennell brothers from San Diego will once again be battling it out, with Dennis Pennell returning in his veteran Reichel/Pugh 50 Blue Blazes, and Ernie Pennell bringing a new weapon to the course, the TP52 Cazador. Buddy Richley’s Amante may be the oldest competitor in the entry list so far. Amante won its class in the ’85 and ‘87 editions of the race. However, docktalk has it that the retooled 40-year-old speed machine Ragtime may return to the West Coast in time to compete. Ragtime was the elapsed time winner in 1973, and won both her class and corrected time trophies in 1987. She was also a competitor 20 years after that in 2007. A newcomer to the NHYC Cabo Race, but a recognized veteran of distance racing, Sue Senescu, will be sailing in the newly commissioned Yippee Kai Yay. Senescu and her women’s sailing team--Nauti Chicas--have been active in several recent coastal distance races. Many sailors use the NHYC Cabo Race as a good opportunity to tune up for the Transpacific Yacht Race, one of the world’s most storied regattas. The Transpac is traditionally held three months after the run to Cabo San Lucas. Like several other big-boat regattas scheduled for 2009—including the Transpac and the Hoag Cup—the Cabo Race will be using the ORR measurement rule to allow boats of different sizes and configurations to race on equal footing. In order to promote safe and fun participation, offshore safety rules require that a number of a boat’s crew members have up-to-date certification from a Safety-at-Sea seminar. To help boats and crews meet that requirement and prepare for the 800-mile passage down the coast, NHYC has once again partnered with the Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship to host a Safety-at-Sea seminar in January 2009. The seminar is traditionally very well attended and usually includes a dramatic demonstration of a water rescue by a United States Coast Guard helicopter. Boats that are interested in entering the race can go to the race website through a link www.nhyc.org and clicking on “Go” next to the regatta logo. Race Documents and links to online entry forms are available for download there. Applications for entry are available through December 31, 2008, but the early entry fee of $800 expires on November 30, 2008.
