From: Andrew Davis Merrill Family Sailing Center Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 2009 National High School Singlehanded Championship for Cressy Trophy Cornell University and Hobart William Smith Colleges were proud to host 2008 National High School Singlehanded Championship for Cressy Trophy on October 17-19th. 18 Laser and and 18 Laser Radial Sailors from around the country started practice races Friday after rigging up 36 brand new Lasers provided Laser Performance. Mid day had a strong northerly breeze kicking down Cayuga Lake, PRO Charlie Cook got off a number practice starts and practice races to warm things up. As competitors returned to shore we saw numbers began to drift off sails. Thanks to the efforts of the RC team and Cornell Sailing team members, Friday night, all 36 sails were redone with new numbers heat gunned and pressed to the sails. Saturday morning racing was scheduled to begin at begin at 10 AM, but with cool foggy morning an early lunch break was taken on land before the competitors headed out. The northerly filled and the RC team completed 11 races, keeping the competitors on the water until 5:30. Courses were predominantly Windward Leewards with a gate, finish down wind. 1 breakdown request was heard at the end of the day. Saturday evening was a post race banquet on Cornell's Campus, including video summary of the day provided by SailGroove.org. Check out race video and interview on SailGroove.org. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday, but with no fog on the lake in the morning and a weak southerly to delay the northerly from filling in. Lunch was taken early, and a lighter northerly filled in to overtake our shifty south breeze. Tours of the nearly completed Merrill Family Sailing Center were given as competitors waited for breeze. Check out the brand new facility online thanks to SailGrorve.org at http://www.sailgroove.org/...4200-cornell-sailing Competitors got on the water shortly after 11, and completed another 6 races before the time limit expired at 1500. 1 Protest and 1 breakdown were heard. Congratulations to Luke Lawrence from Martin County High School (Stuart, FL) winning the Laser Division and Christopher Stocke from Sarasota High School (Sarasota, FL) winning the Laser Radial Division.
