Manhasset Bay Fall Series Oct. 18-19, 25-26, 2008 Port Washington, NY – Manhasset Bay Fall Series ended the major WLIS fall regatta season with 3 days of big breezes, followed by a day of sun and shifty north-westerlies. The big breeze and warm water make this a favorite event for serious racers. Kincsem, Joerg Esdorn’s J105, with Duncan Henn, took home the John B. Thomson Sr. Memorial Trophy for the best overall performance in IRC or one design, finishing with a 2-1-1-(4)-2-1, total 7 pts. Hustler’s straight bullets won John Esposito’s J29 the Ted Clark Trophy for Best performance in PHRF classes, finishing 1-1-1-1-(2)-1, total 5 pts. The most exciting racing came on the second Saturday with winds from the SSE at 18-29 knots with gusts into the low-30’s by the end of race one. The race course was tucked into Hempstead Harbor for the lesser wave heights, but none the less, there were 2 MOBs, both recovered safely. Kudos to our KP friends for assistance and to Snow Lion for standing by to assist. (Redress requested and granted to Snow Lion for the stand-by.) A broken boom (Andiamo J105), a few ripped mains and a few blown out chutes were also seen around the race course. After starting the sequence for a second race, the RC pulled the plug and sent the sailors ashore for refreshment, a move that drew many complements. The broken boom was proudly displayed on the lawn of MBYC that afternoon. The first weekend’s weather was classic for MB Fall Series – ENE at 15 – 20 knots. Two races the first Saturday were followed by a long distance race on Sunday. The final Sunday’s weather drew some sighs of relief from competitors, and two shorter races in the shifty/streaky NW breeze were completed. Event founder, John Thomson, Jr., in Infinity took honors in IRC class 1, and recalled the first Fall Series at the awards presentation. The biggest smiles at the awards ceremony came from Rick Royce’s crew of Webb Institute students. Their pre-race tunes on Sunday morning were enjoyed by the RC. The Huguenot Trophy, awarded to the club with the best 3 finishes, was Lloyd Harbor YC, a repeat winner from 2006. The Lloyd Harbor winning team: Dreadlocks (1st in Class 7), Vex (2nd in Class 4) and Rift (3rd in Class 6). Results: Fall Series 2008 Class 1, IRC Fall Series 2008 Class 3, IRC Fall Series 2008 Class 4, PHRF Fall Series 2008 Class 5, J/105 Fall Series 2008 Class 6, PHRF Fall Series 2008 Class 7, PHRF Event site: http://www.manhassetbayyc.org/default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=227668&ssid=76745&vnf=1
