Hobie 40th Anniversary is Quite the Family Affair By Lynn Fitzpatrick Dana Point, CA, October 5 - The Hobie Cat 40th Anniversary Regatta took place this weekend…all weekend. The reunion of generations of Hobie Cat sailors started on Friday night with a 350-person reception at Dana Point Yacht Club and raged through Sunday evening, well after the trophy presentation was over. They came to see Hobie Alter and they came to see friends whom they haven’t seen in 20 years or more. Over 100 multihulls with the iconic “H” on the third panel down from the head launched through the surf and the surfers at Doheny State Beach at Dana Point and enjoyed light air races on Saturday and Sunday, breakfasts, paddleboard races, volleyball, a kayaking demo, a barbecue cook out, a band, videos and a Hobie legends presentation. The parking lot was full with vans, Winnebagos and trailers from all over North America. Rather than talking about the model of their car, they marveled over their boats. “Hey is that a ’72?” or “Wow, a ‘91!” Some flew great distances for the reunion including Enrique and Carla Figueroa and Pedro Colon and Monica Cabrera from Puerto Rico, John Jay Kersh from Australia and even sailors from Japan. The entire extended Hobie family had a great time. From the Alters to the Martells, with dad sailing on one boat and daughters racing together on another, it was quite a family affair. Hobie 16 start
