Bahamas Laser National Championship Montagu Bay, Nassau, Bahamas, Oct 18-19, 2008 Organized and hosted by the Nassau Yacht Club. The breezes were light and variable to almost nothing giving all competitors an exercise in keeping their boats moving and finding and staying in what breeze there was. In addition the light breezes levelled the playing field by allowing all competitors, even those normally too light for the class, the chance to win. The top finishers were those, regardless of size, who were most successful at finding the breeze and keeping their boats moving. First place was won by 15 year old junior sailor Chris Sands, twice National Champion in the Optimist Class, who dominated the fleet by not only winning all five races but winning some of them by a large margin. Second was taken by John Watson Galloway, a long time sailor who began sailing Lasers while a junior in the United States. Third was Fernando deCardenas, undoubtedly the heaviest sailor in the fleet but a testament to the view that in light air weight, like age, is "nothing but a number" and good boat handling is the dominant factor for success. Fourth was Donico Brown. Like Chris, Donico is a product of the Bahamas National Sailing Association Summer Sailing Program although he has only been sailing 3 years and this past summer worked with the BSA as an assistant instructor as he had aged out of the Optimist Class. These four were head and shoulders above the rest of the fleet. However, the rest of the fleet was also highly competitive with a number of ties amongst the competitors. Two other products of the Bahamas National Sailing Association, Gerzario Anderson and the youngest competitor in the fleet, 12 year old Bianca Illing-Wagner, also proved themselves to be competent competitors and perhaps forces to be reckoned with in the years to come.
