2008 Stone Horse Builder's Cup Race Log-In to Post

In an exciting finish to the 2008 Stone Horse Builder's Cup Race sponsored by Edey & Duff of Mattapoisett, MA, the top three Stone Horses were within two boat lengths with only a bow sprit, about 4 feet, separating the top two boats, WINDFALL and YOUNG AMERICA.

WINDFALL, sailed by Tom Kenney of the New Bedford Yacht Club and Bob Jackson of Cohasset, took 1st Place, edging out 2nd Place finisher Bob Sachetti of Boston, who was single handing YOUNG AMERICA. In third place was PEGASUS, owned by Edey & Duff and captained by Dan Rowe of Mattapoisett with a crew of three.

Bob Sachetti in YOUNG AMERICA was first over the starting line followed by PEGASUS and BEWITCHED, skippered by Tom Browne of Woods Hole. YOUNG AMERICA held the lead for the first two legs followed closely by PEGASUS. A slow starting WINDFALL advanced into 3rd Place by the end of the first leg. Pointing higher than the lead boats on the second leg and with right of way on a starboard tack, WINDFALL rounded the windward mark just ahead of YOUNG AMERICA and PEGASUS. WINDFALL held the lead for the entire final leg, though the separation from YOUNG AMERICA was never more than a boat length and most often a matter of feet. Bob Sachetti made several attempts to get to windward of WINDFALL, but Tom Kenney was able to hold him off by the slimmest of margins and squeak out his first win in the Stone Horse Builder's Cup series.

The top three finishers are:

1st Place Tom Kenney/Bob Jackson WINDFALL Padanaram, MA
2nd Place Bob Sachetti YOUNG AMERICA Boston, MA
3rd Place Dan Rowe PEGASUS Mattapoisett, MA

Also on the course was Harry Mote of Red Bank, NJ, sailing his shoal draft Shearwater, also built by Edey & Duff. The surprisingly fast Shearwater, which sails in "inches" of water, got up on a plane while on a reach, and passed the fleet of full keeled Stone Horses.

After the race, all enjoyed the fine hospitality of the owners and staff of Edey & Duff at their Aucoot Cove facility in Mattapoisett, MA. A great day!

Great photos Captain! It looks like a well sailed race in spirited conditions. Keep me in mind for future races!
