12 Metres race in Newport, RI celebrating the America’s Cup 50th Anniversary
Showcasing the enduring grace, beauty and power of 12 Metres, the 2008 North Americans promise to delight sailing enthusiasts of all ages in a celebration of 50 years of 12 Metres competing in the America’s Cup.

NEWPORT, R.I., 41º North, 71º West – Visions of Newport's sailing golden age will return to Narragansett Bay in September when a fleet of 12 Metre yachts vie for the title rights to the 2008 12 Metre North American Championship by Division. The three day weekend of racing will begin with a revival of the “Candy Store Cup”, a “full fleet” 12 Metre distance race on Friday, September 19, followed by two days of racing for the North American Championship trophy.

In all, more than a dozen boats will take to the storied waters off of Newport, in what is being described as the preview event to the 2008-2009 "12 Metre Golden Year of Racing," a world-wide celebration marking the 50th anniversary of 12 Metres and the America's Cup.

Hosted by the 12 Metre Class, and under the organizing authority of The New York Yacht Club, the three day weekend will mix racing with relaxation and celebration.

A gala celebration commemorating yet another sailing milestone will also take place during the three day occasion, when Sail Newport fetes its 25th anniversary at The New York Yacht Club's Harbour Court on Friday, September 19.

The weekend will also feature a special evening event in the regatta tent at Bowen’s Wharf Saturday, September 20; in honor of America's Cup sailing legends entitled "This is your life, Halsey Herreshoff and Jack Sutphen," which will take an intimate look back on the duo's 50 years of sailing.

Some of the 12 Metres likely to compete in the 2008 North Americans include America's Cup winners Columbia (1958), Weatherly (1962), Intrepid (1967,1970) and Courageous (1974, 1977). Others likely to participate include America's Cup defender trial yachts American Eagle and Enterprise, as well as America's Cup contender trial yachts USA, Lionheart, Victory ’83, Hissar and Kiwi Magic. All competing yachts will be docked at Bannister’s and Bowen’s Wharves during the regatta.

The 12 Metre Golden Year of Racing will begin in October 2008 and will be highlighted by a series of lectures, presentations and regattas with the center-piece being the 2009 12 Metre World Championships, scheduled to take place September 22 – 27.
