My favorite Anna Tunnicliffe story Log-In to Post

From Ken Legler, Reading, MA:
Here's my Anna Tunnicliffe story - I was running a college women's regatta in March one year on a cold and blustery day when one team turtled and couldn't get righted. As they were struggling in the cold water I brought them in and looked for some Tufts sailors on the dock. I found Anna Tunnicliffe and her Old Dominion crew dressed in drysuits ready to go. Knowing they were really fit, great sailors and good sports, I asked if they would help and they jumped at the chance. I dropped them off on the upside down boat in the 40 degree water where they immediately righted the boat and sailed it in.

Way to go Anna, you've represented your family, North Cape, ODU and the USA well, very well!

I have a few stories, but the best has to come from last night's reception at NCYC. Hundreds of people came out to congratulate her and she did a fantastic job of telling stories from her experience at the Olympics.

What caught my attention was how she interacted with the kids of NCYC, both sailors and non-sailors. I know my daughters were more psyched about sailing after her visit!!

From Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s Vice Commodore Ed Payne:

Anna Tunnicliffe. An AMAZING lady, to be sure!

We all know she won the Gold Medal in the Olympics.

Tonight (Wednesday, August 27th), I had the honor of being invited to North Cape Yacht Club, for an honorarium of Anna. And yes, Anna was THERE!!!!

With all she has to do to satisfy sponsors, she found it a priority to return to her roots at North Cape, to see her friends, recognize her past, and see the future she has energized here, at the Club where she started.

I was privileged to meet Anna last year, at the I-LYA Junior Sail Regatta. Indeed, it was an honor then, as it was for me to be there tonight. I recall my friend, John Greiner, telling me how she sailed with him so many years ago, and how he knew then how remarkable she was as a sailor. Today, we all know the truth in that observation. We should also recognize what a remarkable woman she is as well!

Duane Burgoyne was the Master of Ceremonies tonight, and he did a wonderful job! First bringing out Anna’s husband (married 3 months, most of which has been spent in the pathway to, and actually at, the Olympics). Then, bringing out Anna’s mother, who described how they found North Cape Yacht Club, simply by driving down I-75 in the winter and seeing the masts of the boats, and how they just knew they needed to join. And then, bringing out the star of the evening, Anna herself!

Duane had stayed up every night, watching Anna’s races on the computer. He had read everything written about Anna. And he questioned her about it all; by painting a complete scene so everyone knew what the question actually asked. And for every scenario Duane presented, Anna answered with absolutely the same colorful manner as to allow everyone present to feel they were actually there, with her, in the race!

Commodore Tom Grime offered a toast to Anna, and presented her with a North Cape Yacht Club vest, with her name embroidered, in gold of course, along with the North Cape flag.

Duane also had been able to engage the news media from Toledo to be at this event. Channel 11, Channel 13, Channel 24, and several print media people were on hand. After the stage presentation described above, Anna retired to a back room with the news media, for more direct interviews.

North Cape Yacht Club was filled to overflowing tonight, with people there to honor Anna. It was indeed an honor for Donna and me to be among them.

Thank you North Cape Yacht Club, and Thank YOU, Anna Tunnicliffe!!!
