July 25, 2009 For Immediate Release The sixth annual Regatta for Lake Champlain, presented by Rock Point Advisors, took place Saturday July 25, starting just outside the Burlington Breakwater. 44 sailboats ranging in size from 22 to 45 feet competed in this race to benefit Lake Champlain. The pursuit race was sailed in southerly winds which ranged from 4 to 12 miles per hour over the 13.1 mile course that sent boats sailing west from Burlington to Schuyler Reef near the New York shore, then south to the Four Brothers Islands, then returning to Burlington. First overall in the race was K2 skippered by Luis Gonzalez of Grand Isle, followed Jean Pierre Turgeon in Galilee representing the Valcour Sailing Club. Illusion owned by Rod Carr and Bob Fardelmann finished in third place. The Regatta for Lake Champlain is a benefit event that raises money for organizations that work to promote the health, well being and sustainable use of the Lake. This year the event raised over $10,000. Over the past five years (not including 2009) the Regatta has donated a total of over $45,000 to the following beneficiaries: ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain; The Lake Champlain Committee; The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum; and The Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center, and the Cumberland Bay Community Boating Center.
