August 23, 2010 - Day 1 report

A couple of broken masts, many dumped boats, LOTS of bailing, and LOTS of wind, but PRO Irene McNeill and CRO Shelley Vaughan ran four races for the hearty young people in the Red, Blue, and White fleets, who braved the winds and rain of the first day of the Optimist Canadian Championships. The Green fleet did not race today.

The winds were forecasted to come in strong, and strong they did at over 20 knots. Our race crew of volunteers did an exceptional job keeping the marks in place and watching out for sailors who's boats had turtled. These little sailors will definitely sleep well tonight!

August 24, 2010 - Day 2 report

Day 2 of sailing at Canadian Championships proved to be challenging and an overall test of sailors skills with winds ranging from 8 to 18 knots through the day. Dave Hein, Sail 14766 from the USA found it to be a great day of sailing, with the varying winds bringing more of a mental challenge in each of the four races. The 13 year-old stated, “It was interesting sailing, shifty winds. Today’s conditions required me to be constantly aware as they often changed.” Dave continued with “It definitely distinguished the experienced sailors from the less experienced: banging corners versus playing a side or playing the middle.”
Tomorrow will be a break from fleet racing for the team racing challenges.

Inaugural Opti Team Racing Challenge in Canada

A team racing challenge, a unique experience is being offered to the young Opti sailors in Hamilton, Ontario during the 2010 Optimist Canadian Championships. On August 25th, teams are being set up, strategies are being developed and instructions and rules are being studied. In all there will be 12 teams of 4, representing sailors from across Canada, the United States, Bermuda and France. Keith Richardson, CODA Class Development Officer pointed out “This is an exciting opportunity for sailors to develop new racing skills. This is an inaugural event for the Canadian Championships, mirroring practices at similar international events.” “It will be a spectator friendly event that can be viewed from shore at the RHYC inner harbour.” Team races are short, fast and thrilling.

August 25 - Day 3 Report

Let’s do it again – team racing a hit at Canadian nationals

12 year old Julien Brunet of Lachine, Quebec can’t wait to repeat the experience of team racing. “We had code words and sacrifice, “players” and those chosen to “go for the wind”, we worked together and it was great fun.” Julien and his teammates were happy to hear that their coaches are already planning to add team racing to their 5 provincial Opti challenges in the coming year.

The Purple Monkeys, a team made up of PCYC and RCYC sailors, and LOOT took second and first place respectively. They beat out 10 other teams from across Canada, the United States, Bermuda and France over the course of 32 races.

The introduction of team racing at the Canadian Nationals seemed to be a hit with the sailors, judges and spectators in attendance at the RHYC.
