BRAZIL’S SENFFT TAKES EARLY LEAD IN NORTHERN LIGHTS CUP
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- 2008 Northern Lights Cup champion Juliana Senfft (Niterói, Brazil) stepped out to a quick lead in the first day of racing of the Northern Lights Cup Grade 3 women’s match-racing regatta. The Brazilian Olympic team hopefuls won all five of their races today.

Kristen Lane (Tiburon, California) also finished the day with five points, although she completed the round robin, losing only to Senfft and her crew.

Racing was postponed for the morning as light air and large swells forced the fleet back to shore to wait it out. In the afternoon a steady 8- to 10-knot breeze filled in from the south, allowing the race committee, led by Principal Race Officer Dave Bronson (Sheboygan, Wisconsin), to complete six flights of racing. All competitors other than Lane will sail one more race tomorrow to complete the round robin before Round Robin 2 begins.

Teams are awarded one point for each win. Following the first day of racing, point totals were as follows: Senfft, 5; Lane, 5 (Round Robin 1 completed); Alana O’Reilley (Charleston, South Caroline), 3; Sarah Bury (Toronto, Ontario), 2; Liz Hjorth (Marina del Rey, California), 2; Maeghan Ruhlman (Bratenahl, Ohio), 1; Kathy Lindgren (Belgium, Wisconsin), 0.

The Northern Lights Cup is sailed in 23-foot Sonars off the Sheboygan lakefront on Lake Michigan and hosted by the US Sailing Center Sheboygan. Each team will sail against every other team in each of two round robins, before the top qualifiers will go onto the semi-final round robin, followed by the final and petit-final round.

The US Sailing Center Sheboygan is the newest of four US Sailing centers in the country. The center recently took delivery of the first Elliott 6m sailboats—the new Olympic class boat—in the United States. Following the Northern Lights Cup, members of the US Sailing Team Alphagraphics will come to the center for a week of intensive training on the boats, and in September the center will host the first Elliot 6m regatta in the United States, the Buddy Melges Challenge.

Brazil’s Senfft repeats Northern Lights Cup victory

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Juliana Senfft (Niteroi, Brazil) and her crew Gabriell Sa, Adhara Ginaid and Mariena Jardim trounced a competitive fleet at the Northern Lights Cup Sunday, August 9, to win the Grade 3 match racing regatta for the second year in a row.

Senfft took an early lead in the first day of racing. Racing was cancelled for the day on Saturday when heavy fog, caused by unseasonably cold Lake Michigan water and hot summer air, blanketed the Sheboygan lakefront.

When racing resumed Sunday, Senfft and her team were still in tune. The team finished the regatta with 11 wins and just one loss. Kristen Lane (Tiburon, California) took second with nine wins and three losses, followed by Alana O’Reilly (Charleston, South Carolina) with eight wins and four losses.

The regatta was sailed in equally matched 23-foot Sonar sailboats.

Complete results:
  1. Juliana Senftt (Niteroi, Brazil), Gabriell Sa, Adhara Ginaid (11-1)
  2. Kristen Lane (Tiburon, California), Genny Tulloch, Jacqueline Schmitz, Ashley Perrin (9-3)
  3. Alana O’Reilly (Charleston, South Carolina), Shannon Heausler, Evan Brown, Amanda Callahan (8-4)
  4. Sarah Bury (Toronto, Ontario), Barbara Cears Sijpesteijn, Jen Aprile, Caroline Caars Sijpesteijn (7-5)
  5. Maeghan Ruhlmann (Bratenahl, Ohio), Caroline Sundman, Emily Pulos, Katy Werley (4-8)
  6. Liz Hjorth (Marina del Rey, California), Karyn Jones, Nina Burokas, Robbin Stout (3-9)
  7. Kathy Lindgren (Belgium, Wisconsin), Denise Cornell, Kim Orlebeke, Lori Jost (0-12)

The Northern Lights Cup is run annually by the US Sailing Center Sheboygan. For more upcoming events at the center, go to www.ussailingcentersheboygan,org.

Currently the US Sailing Team Alphagraphics is training on new Elliott 6m sailboats at the center. The team will return for another training session in September. The first regatta in the new Elliott 6m boats will be the Buddy Melges Challenge September 10 to 13, which is expected to be a Grade 2 match racing event.
