Skippers participating in all three events include Reuben Corbett (NZ), Juan Ignacio Grimaldi (ARG), Laurie Jury (NZ), Dave Perry (USA), Phil Robertson (NZ), Keith Swinton (AUS) and Chris Van Tol (USA).

The teams for this year’s Knickerbocker Cup are an international group of talented match racers. Dave Perry, an collegiate All-American and two-time Congressional Cup champions, also known for his books on racing rules, will represent the United States, along with Chris Van Tol, the “zero to hero” team, from Bayview YC in Detroit, MI, who came out of nowhere to win the 2007 Knickerbocker Cup. He will be back this year to try again to recapture the Cup. Rounding out the teams from the U.S. will be Anna Tunnicliffe and Sally Barkow. Anna was the 2008 winner of the Laser Radial Gold Medal at the Olympic Games and the 2008 US SAILING Yachtswoman of the Year. Sally Barkow made history by winning the 2009 Ficker Cup match race and becoming the first woman to sail into a spot in the Congressional Cup. International teams include: Taylor Canfield (USVI), Reuben Corbett (NZ), Richard Fornander (SWE), Juan Grimaldi (ARG), Laurie Jury (NZ), Jeremy Lucas (CAN), Phil Robertson (NZ), and Keith Swinton (AUS). Four of the teams are returning to try again to test their skills against the vagaries of wind and current on Manhasset Bay. Will past knowledge of local waters catapult the returnees to a podium finish? It is anyone’s guess, but if the past can be a reliable predictor, capturing the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup will be up for grabs, and no one in their right mind would want to bet on any one team. Manhasset Bay has brought many match racers to their knees, and one can only imagine what she has in store for the 12 teams invited to participate in the 2009 Cup.

Two US Teams Tied for First Place After Day 1 at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup

Port Washington, NY – Anna Tunnicliffe, Gus (USA), Olympic Gold Medalist, and Dave Perry, Team Perry (USA), collegiate All-American and two-time Congressional Cup champion and popular author on racing rules are tied for first place, 4-1, after Flight 6 on the first day of racing at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup. Keith Swinton, Black Swan Match Racing (AUS) is in 3rd place, 3-2, followed closely by Laurie Jury, Slam Match Kiwi (NZ), 2-3. Winds were fluky all day with a weak north westerly filling in enough to get off 3 flights. RC postponed midday when the wind died, only to return as a very light southerly filled in, allowing RC to finish the day with 6 flights completed.

Racing continues on Friday, with good wind predicted for Manhasset Bay, giving the rest of the teams a chance to catch up. All eyes are on Phil Robertson (NZ), who came to the Knickerbocker Cup after winning the Chicago Match Race Cup; Chris Van Tol (USA), winner of the 2007 Knickerbocker Cup; and Taylor Canfield (ISV), all who won their one race today, and are gearing up to take on the rest of the pack. At this point no one can be ruled out and there is still a lot of racing before any one team can be named

Anna Tunnicliffe in the Lead after Day 2 at the Knickerbocker Cup

Port Washington, NY – After a very long day that had it all - rain, no wind, postponements, afternoon wind, more rain and exciting racing - Anna Tunnicliffe, one of two women’s teams competing in the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup, captured the top spot on the leader board. The morning was extremely frustrating for the race committee and the racers as the winds on Manhasset Bay were light, variable and the wind shifted almost 90°, causing the Race Committee to execute numerous course changes. According to Sue Miller, Manhasset Bay YC Commodore and PRO, and Jeanne Rosenthal, Assistant PRO, “the course chances were too numerous to count. Wonderful wind in the afternoon allowed us to get in lots of matches which were very exciting.” That’s an understatement as spectators were treated to many close calls, collisions, and very heated exchanges between skippers, especially at the dial –up as teams aggressively tried to gain control of the start by forcing their competitor into the RC boat. Matches along the course were no less exciting, as the mark roundings were closely fought and the leads shifted back and forth between competitors.

Anna Tunnicliffe, Gus, (USA) when asked about her strategy that put her team on the top, commented, “Our goal coming into the event was to keep advancing through the rounds. The first round we needed to finish in the top 8 to advance to the second round, and we feel we did the best we could to accomplish that goal. There are a lot of teams that still have plenty of races left that we have no control over, so we will see at the end of the Round Robin what our standing is.”

Danielle Powers, a local racer, who won the Ed du Moulin – Dennis Conner Junior Match Racing Trophy a few years ago, raced with Sally Barkow (USA), Rigging Systems, when one of their team was injured. “What a wonderful opportunity for me to race with this team. I have always wanted to participate in the Knickerbocker Cup, as I grew up in the Knickerbocker Junior Sailing Program and volunteered for the event for many years. It is incredible what you can learn in such a short time. I look forward to coming back tomorrow.”

The day ended with the daily Umpires’ debrief that was especially interesting and reminded everyone, once again, why so many prefer to match race. The lion’s share of the discussion revolved around two really exciting finishes by Taylor Canfield (Team ISV), both of which involved penalties that had Canfield maneuvering to block his competitor so he could complete his penalty and still try to win the match.

Discussion was lively as Umpires and competitors discussed the rules and options available to the racers. Saturday will be a make or break day for the competitors. The weather forecast is for soaking rain but lots of wind. There are a lot of matches left for all the teams, but with Phil Robertson, Waka Racing (NZ) and Reuben Corbett, Black Sheep Racing (NZ) nipping at Tunnicliffe’s heels, it should be very interesting indeed. By end of day tomorrow, we should have a good idea who will be in the running for the final exciting day on Sunday when we present the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup to a deserving team who raced fast, found pressure and understood the vagaries of wind and current on Manhasset Bay.

Suspense Reigns at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup

After the fourth round of the 6-team quarter finals at the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup, Reuben Corbett (NZ), Black Sheep Racing, leads with 4 wins, followed by Phil Robertson (NZ), Waka Racing, with 3 wins, leaving Keith Swinton (AUS), Black Swan Match Racing, Dave Perry (USA), Team Perry, with two wins each, and Anna Tunnicliffe (USA), Gus, and Rick Fornander (SWE) with one win each. Sunday morning’s last flight in the quarter finals is crucial as it will determine which three teams will advance to the semis along with Corbett, who has already secured a spot.

When the Knickerbocker Cup began, we knew the competition would be tight, a prediction that proved to be correct. By mid day on Saturday, at the end of the full round robin, Chief Umpire Bruce Cook and the Race Committee had to break two four-way ties. Speaking of the teams competing this year, Cook commented, “These ties reflect the quality and closeness of the competition here at the Knickerbocker Cup.”

Once the ties were broken and team position determined, racing continued with the semi finals which also were cliff hangers. One team was black flagged after committing two penalties in the pre-start, followed by hitting the Committee Boat. Finishes were extremely close with a delta of a few seconds in several matches.

Wind conditions on Manhasset Bay were great in the afternoon with winds sustained at 12 knots with gusts to 15, which resulted in fast action, exciting mark roundings, and a masterful display of boat handling.

Sunday will be match racing at its best. With competition this fierce, and the stakes so high, one minor mistake will make or break a team’s getting into the finals. Sometimes there is an obvious front runner to win the Cup by the last day of racing, but not this year. You can bet that no one will be willing to call “a winner” until the very end. That’s the beauty of match racing.

Reuben Corbett (NZ) Wins the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup

Port Washington, NY – Reuben Corbett, Black Sheep Racing (NZ) and his crew Miles Addy, Brad Farrand, Tom Bentham, have won the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup. After placing 6th in the full round robin and winning the semi-finals in a tie breaker, Corbett went on the capture the Cup in a tight matches with Dave Perry (USA), Team Perry, beating the American 3-2. Phil Robertson (NZ), Waka Racing, beat out Keith Swinton (AUS), Black Swan Match Racing, in the petit finals.

Wind on Manhasset Bay was zero to light in the morning, forcing the Race Committee to postpone racing until just about mid-day. With time now becoming a factor, and the wind not cooperating, the Race Committee and Chief Umpire proposed to the competitors that there would be no warning signal after 3:15 pm and all competitors agreed. It was Perry vs. Robertson in a first to 3 match, with Perry besting Robertson 2-0. The other match was Swinton vs. Corbett and the score was 1-1, when time ran out and the third match cancelled. The tie was broken in favor of Corbett based on his quarter finals position (4-1) against Swinton (2-3). Corbett got the pass to the finals and Swinton moved into the petit finals.

Wind finally picked up on the bay and the finals and petit finals were hard fought and exciting. Robertson quickly beat Swinton in the first match 2-0. Not so the match between Perry and Corbett. In the first to 3, Perry won the first match, Corbett the next two. Perry, that master of pulling off miracles, came roaring back to win match 3 after dominating the start. Score was now 2-2. It came down to the fifth and last race to determine who would win the Cup. It was match racing at its finest, pitting the US against the New Zealanders. Corbett led at the start and kept his lead throughout the match, racing to victory and winning the 2009 Knickerbocker Cup.

According to Corbett, “The biggest thing was to make sure we improved throughout the regatta. In particular on the last day, we had to sail to the puffs. It was really shifty, and we had 3 of the 4 on our team calling the shifts.” Obviously their strategy worked, for now Corbett will have his name engraved on the Knickerbocker Cup along with others who have gone on to fame in the match racing world: Paul Cayard, Ed Baird, Russell Coutts, Terry Hutchinson, Peter Gilmour, and Dave Perry, who won the event in 1988 and 1992.

The Knickerbocker Cup is a qualifier for the World Match Racing Tour, with the winner gaining an automatic entry to the King Edward VII Gold Cup in Bermuda, one of the most prestigious match racing events on the Tour. With Corbett’s win here in Manhasset Bay, he and his team will be in Bermuda this coming October and will find out how they stand up against the best ISAF ranked match racers in the world.
