Our San Francisco-based team continued its successful program with Scott DeWeese on J/105 Power Play by bringing the boat up from Wickford, RI to New Bedford, MA for the lightly-attended but hotly contested J/105 fleet at BBR 2009. After two light air and shifty days, marked by long delays and abandoned races, only three races were completed. Perennial Southern NE powerhouse Savasana, sailed by Brian Keane out of Marion, MA, led the regatta with 4 points, followed by Sea Shadow, another well-sailed local boat skippered by Chuck Shumway, with 6 points. Power Play trailed with 9 points. On Sunday, the breeze filled in and Power Play romped to three bullets in the day's three races to make up the deficit and win the regatta over Savasana on the tie-breaker. Results are shown below:

BBR 2009 Final Results - J/105 Fleet

Just finished the Buzzards Bay Regatta in Dartmouth, MA. I hadn't sailed a Laser since May, so my goal was to sail a steady event and not make any huge mistakes. Aside for one capsize I achieved that goal, never winning a race but (other than the race where I capsized) never placing out of the top 5 to finish 2nd overall out of 55 entrants.Scott Ferguson was even more consistent, counting only one or two finishes out of the top *TWO*--a commanding performance.

We got in 8 races in a variety of conditions, but mostly lumpy chop and 8-15 knots of wind. All races were W-L-Finish above the windward mark, placing a premium on upwind speed. Masters took 8 of the top 10 spots--it will be interesting to see how the Americans fare at the Laser Master Worlds coming up the end of the month!
