Day 1 – One race --A slow start to the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championships due to wind conditions

Toronto, Ontario, August 22, 2010 – The Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championships commenced today with one wet windy race just a few kilometres off the Toronto Island. A fleet of 15 8Metre boats including Canadians, Americans and Europeans all started together. Sarissa of Switzerland won the first race in the modern division while the Canadian boat, Ravan, won the classic division race.

Shipping 15 8Metre Yachts from around the world is a race in itself. One of the Swiss boats made it just in time as their boat was held up in transit and only arrived the morning of the first race. North American 8Metre Association President Rob Roy says, “I was impressed that Aluette was able to launch their boat, rig, measure in and make it out to the race course in time for the first race, and finally finish third in the race”.

Both the classic and modern 8 Metre yachts race for the 8Metre World Cup while the classic (vintage boats); mostly wood boats originally made in the early 1900’s, race for the Sira Cup. The five day regatta, with two races a day, for a maximum of nine races, makes up the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championship.

About the North American Eight Metre
The 8Metre yacht (8mR ) dates back over one hundred years. Today, the 8mR class is comprised of the Classic and Modern divisions. Both types of boats must meet strict measurement criteria for the hull and rig in order to qualify in one of these divisions. Generally, the boat measures approximately 14 metres in length with beams (width) of around 2.5.

The Classic 8mR’s are the mainstay of the class. They provide a display of unmatched wooden beauty and are often kept in families for generations. These are the boats that come to mind first when people think about the 8mR class. The fleet’s status was secured when the Canada’s Cup, the most prestigious regatta on the Great Lakes, was sailed in the 8mR class in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1950’s. Today, many of the 8mR yachts from this earlier era are still competing at regattas on Lake Ontario.

15 knots of breeze, clear skies and sunshine – a perfect third racing day for the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championship

Toronto, Ontario, August 24, 2010 – Toronto delivered perfect late summer sailing conditions for the third day of racing at the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championships – the 8 Metres showed both their true beauty and strength! With two metre swells and 15 knots of easterly breeze, the sailors raced two nearly 10 mile races today. “ It was a hard day of sailing but a lot of fun”, says Rob Roy, North American 8 Metre Class President.

Lafayette of Great Britain is at the top of the leader board with a first and a second in the races today. In the classic division, RCYC’s Raven placed 5th today overall, with a 5th in both races – defeating two of the modern boats. This is a great accomplishment for a classic boat in 15 knots of wind. “Raven sailed extremely well today in the big breeze. They had a great day”, said Rob Roy.

Complete results attached.

Classic 8 Metre boats show their speed today in five knots of breeze at the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championship

Toronto, Ontario, August 25, 2010 – A nice light five knot breeze on Lake Ontario marked the fourth day of the Mackenzie 8 Metre World Championship. This south easterly breeze allowed the classic boats to race head to head with their modern counterparts. Raven had another fabulous day with a 6, 6 finish in both the races. In the modern division the first race was won by Aluette of Switzerland and the second race by Sarissa of Etobicoke Yacht Club.

“It was another great day for racing 8 Metre’s. The rain held out all day for a gorgeous day on the water. It was a big change from yesterday’s big breeze”, said Rob Roy North American 8 Metre Class President.
