First time participant, Dave Kane, and crew Mark Tagliabue and Charles Kehres , all of Newport, RI, sailed ABLE, Hull #101, to 1st Place in the 2011 Stone Horse Builder's Cup race on Buzzards Bay off of Padanaram. The race was a 4 leg, 4 mile course starting and finishing with windward legs.

Light and variable winds out of the North forced a 1 hour delay in the starting time to 1300 Hours when a 9-10 knot Southerly had set in and thus began a spectacular day on the water with a very traditional fleet.
ABLE, skippered by Dave Kane of Newport, was first over the starting line and held the lead for the entire race. Making it interesting was Bill Hulsman who was hot pursuit on FOOT LOOSE with his special friend Bette Hazelton and Doug & Ingrid Scott of Castine ME and new owners of ANDIAMO, Hull #038. FOOT LOOSE was closing on ABLE throughout the race and, absent some confusion at the final mark, was well positioned to vie for the lead. Not far off the pace and sailing exceptional races were Bob Sachetti, John Sachetti and John Gilbert aboard YOUNG AMERICA and Tom Browne's BEWITCHED crewed by Ethan Stapleton of Little Compton and Eileen Bernstein, the owner of Hull #102, FREELANCE.
After a number of changes in position, PEGASUS, formerly the Edey & Duff company boat, skippered by new owner Jim Stewart, bested the remaining half of the fleet. Also aboard Pegasus were Maura Stewart and Bill McBrine, owner of Hull #001, NAOMH SEAN. Following close behind Pegasus were Tom Kenney, Bob Jackson and Ellie Whelan on WINDFALL and BUTTERFLY sailed by skipper Vern Tisdale and crew, son-in-law Josh Orr and his dad, Ship Orr. .
Bill Wigholm of Colorado was aboard his newly acquired Stone Horse, YANKEE, for the very first time, and was ably assisted by Dan Rowe, a seasoned Stone Horse sailor, and Allen Finger who was pressed into service while walking through Padanaram on the morning of the race. Phil McGlave, owner & skipper of BLUE JAY, was handicapped again this year by an outboard dragging during the race, and is seriously considering re-powering with a vintage 5HP Petter-Westerbeke. Sailing BLUE JAY with Phil were Steve Larson and Warren Hathaway
The New Bedford Yacht Club provided an appropriate, convenient and beautiful venue for the race and the post race rendezvous. We thank the NBYC staff for their professional and genuinely friendly service and for a great post race meal. An unexpected treat was the New England Clam Chowder, an NBYC Chef Dennis specialty, provided courtesy of John Wujack, owner of KITTIWAKE, Hull #122. John, who sails out of the Stillwater Yacht Club in Pebble Beach, CA, could not attend but sent an unexpected and very generous donation to provide a "little something extra." Thank you, John.
Each Stone Horse owner who attended was presented with a new "Edey & Duff Builder's Plate" complete with mounting pins (including an extra pin in case one goes overboard.) A handsome and useful gift conceived and executed by Ed Pavao. Ed Pavao again hand crafted the Ditty Box which has become the custom to present to the Builder's Cup winner.
This year we were able to enjoy the company of Ed Pavao and Fernando Oliveira, and their wives Betty and Angel. Also, traveling up from Newport for the Rendezvous were Nancy and Paul Cardoza, High School friends of Dave Davignon.
Support boats on the course were the Race Committee Boat, SPRINGER, a 28' Pursuit owned by Jon Bier of the South Dartmouth; TOBIAS, a 36' Stanley Lobster Yacht owned by Gregg Child of Newport; and NBYC member Jeff Makholm's ARAPAHO, a 39' Concordia Yawl, carrying spectators and photographer, Pierce Hartman.
Crocker Boat Yard in Manchester-By-The-Sea, MA has been very supportive of our 2011 efforts, and we thank owner Skip Crocker, the great grandson of Stone Horse designer Sam Crocker. Skip also sponsors an annual Crocker Memorial Race for Crocker designed boats and offers a special trophy for the first Stone Horse to cross the line.
Finally, a special thanks for a job well done to Jon Bier and Walt Suchon, both members of the New Bedford Yacht Club, who served on our Race Committee and who were responsible for the on-water race management, and for the use of Jonathan's boat SPRINGER, our Race Committee boat for the last two years.
Let the planning begin for the 2012 Stone Horse Builder's Cup and Rendezvous.
