On March 12, 2011, a sailing event will begin which is unlike any other in the world. The event will draw hundreds of sailors representing the US, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Australia and Argentina. Is it another “Olympic” training regatta? The launch of another “Grand Prix” pro sailing event? They only wish!

This weekend the annual Lightning Southern Circuit will begin with 14 races scheduled at 3 venues (Savannah, Miami, St. Petersburg) over 9 days to test the mettle of both seasoned class veterans and an influx of new talent who have recently caught the Lightning bug and are launching their maiden Lightning programs.

The Lightning Southern Circuit is a marathon, a sprint, a family vacation, a training ground for PanAm Games hopefuls, a serious competition and a serious party all rolled into one. This year will feature at least 4 PanAm country qualifiers, 6 NA Champions, 2 World Champions and a litany of fun loving, talented sailors.

Also, the ILCA 2011 Boat Grant Committee will announce this year's recipients at the annual midwinter banquet on March 19 at St. Petersburg Yacht Club. They will join the 50+ other sailors who have received grants over the past 5 years.

To follow the action, find out information on the events or to participate go to www.lightningclass.org or contact Laura Jeffers at the class office at office@lightningclass.org

We hear that there are many boats rigged and ready to go in Savannah. (My boat too! Thank you Jay!) Todd Wake "won" the race to Savannah and rolled in first and was rigged and ready to go ... yesterday!

The Savannah Yacht Club has rolled out the red carpet and Tony is ready behind the bar.... practice up your knot tying for tomorrow evenings competition (read....Entertainment!). It is looking like we will have around 40 boats! There is still time to jump in the car!!

Did you know that it is Shamrock Shake time??

March 12. 2011

Two races were sailed this afternoon… The first race was sailed in a light northwesterly. The Fleet had 1 general recall and then the pressure was up and down the rest of the race. Staying in breeze and current relief were key factors that kept Jody Lutz and Brian Hayes fighting for the lead. In the end Team Lutz got the gun, Lenny Krawcheck rode a nice puff into second, right in front of Team Hayes. Josh Goldman and Frank Hanson rounded out the top five.

The breeze died and the south west sea breeze filled in with authority. The current was pretty strong which resulted in two general recalls. The third try was under the I flag, a few boats (Tom Starck, David Starck, Hayes, Faus, Hanson and I might be missing a few others), were called over early and all restarted. The tricky Starboard course on the Skiddaway River kept the fleet on its toes hugging the shorelines and putting the spinnaker up and down a lot! Team Lutz continued to dominate the day with another first, followed by Tito Gonzalez, Todd Wake, Team Goldman and Kirk Reynolds. I hear that there are a few protests, so the preliminary results are posted.
Now it’s time for the traditional Oyster Roast!
Oh, and the nats were out when we arrived back to the dock!

Oysters, shamrock-themed adult bevvies, sea-breeze, and a full serving of current for the fleet of Southern Circuit-ees -- it's hard to imagine how we got so double-booked with regattas that I am NOT in Savannah this weekend.

Here are the preliminary results from Savannah, Day 1 again - nothing's changed, just a pdf version rather than excel.

Thanks for the PDF version, Laura -- it shows up clear and quick for me. Now go roast some oysters and say who wins the knot-tying contest...

Re: [Sanderson] 2011 Lightning Southern Circuit [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

The first leg of the 2011 Lightning Southern Circuit, the 55th Deep South hosted by the Savannah Yacht Club, has been completed and a new champion has been crowned. 40 boats competed from as far as Colorado, Wisconsin, Chile, Mexico, Canada, Argentina and Australia to see who could master the Skiddaway and Willington Rivers. The conditions were as challenging as always and the team of Jody Lutz, Jay Lutz and Derek Gauger (Metedeconk River YC) managed the trying conditions flawlessly to dominate a very deep fleet of talent to earn his first ever Deep South Regatta with a 1, 1, 4. They were followed in 2nd place by defending champion David Starck, Joe Starck and PJ Schaffer (Buffalo Canoe Club) with 12 pts. Josh Goldman, Jo Ann Fisher and Jeff Eiber (Cedar Point YC) placed a strong 3rd with 15 points followed by Todd Wake, Kristine Wake and Neil Fowler (Sheboygan YC) in 4th with 16 points. Rounding out the top 5 was the family team of Larry, Adam and Julianne MacDonald (Buffalo Canoe Club) who finished with 18 points. The southern hospitality of the Savannah Yacht Club was greatly appreciated by all the competitors and everyone is looking forward to returning next year. Next up Coral Reef Yacht Club! Stay tuned for reports from Miami…

The Weather Channel shows ideal photography conditions in Miami for the next couple of days -- hope Bill Clausen can share some action shots here or on the ILCA Facebook page. Not to mention the publication of any stray candid hoola-hooping snaps...

Hope the drive was safe and the fleet continues to grow as the Circuit makes its second stop --

It is a shame that Race 1 of the Lightning Midwinters was two days after Carnival Miami’s parade of thousands down Calle Ocho because it was a crazy parade too with wild wind shifts. The course was set at 115 degrees but the wind shifted from 75 to 150. CRYC’s PRO Jane Anne Pincus adjusted the course several times. The top three for Race 1 were Kirk Reynolds, Morley Flynn and Pat O’Connor in 1st, Todd Wake, Kristine Wake and Neal Fowler in 2nd and Allan Turhune, Katie Terhune and Dave Hughes in 3rd. Viva Miami! Two more races today! Wink

The Miami Mambo continues at the 2011 Lightning Midwinters with enough wind shifts to entertain everyone. In Race 2, the top three were Todd Wake’s team followed by Skip Dieball and Jody Lutz. This moves Todd and his crew Kristine Wake and Neal Fowler into first. Getting ready for Race 3. Cool

As the temperatures over Biscayne Bay warmed up, the wind lightened. It was not, however, quiet enough for a siesta and all boats finished Race 3 before the time limit. The leaders for this race were Kirk Reynolds in 1st , Gary Sowder in 2nd and Ryan Ruhlman in 3rd. The regatta itself is tightening up with only 1 point separating Pymatuning Yacht Club’s Ryan Ruhlman and his crew Nick Turnery and Martha Fisher in 1st with 13 points and Sheboygan Yacht Club’s Todd Wake and crew Kristine Wake and Neal Fowler in 2nd place with 14 points. Jody Lutz and crew Jay Lutz and Derek Gaugher from Metedeconk River Yacht Club are in 3rd place with 19 points. Wink

Good to hear on-the-water updates -- hope Wednesday will bring classic Biscayne Bay conditions back to the racers. Was there a near-tragic hoola-hooping incident last night -- I heard something about drinks being spilled poolside.

They came, they sailed and they hoola hooped around the pool at Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club. Luckily the swirly winds managed to allow 4 races for the 37 competing boats with Jody Lutz’ good finish in 2nd place in Race 4 of the 2011 Lightning Midwinters giving his team First Place in the regatta. Jody and his crew Jay Lutz and Derek Gauger are celebrating as they dock this minute at Coral Reef Yacht Club after another day of shifty winds, sunny skies and 76 degree weather. Lutz was followed in the overall regatta trophies by Todd Wake and crew Kristine Wake and Neal Fowler in 2nd and Josh Goldman, Jo Ann Fisher and Jeff Eiber in 3rd . Rob Ruhlman’s bullet in Race 4 brought his team of Abby Ruhlman and Dave Werley up to 4th place overall in the regatta. Thanks to PRO Jane Anne Pincus and her RC for squeezing out four good races. Have fun in St. Pete!

On our way South today, we spotted a few Southern Circuit teams crossing Alligator Alley in a leisurely way. I'm jonesing for news of the festivities, perhaps even a few discreet photos? I know, it's hard to pull away from the festivities –– or carve time away from sleeping! –– to type it up. In any case, best of luck all.

It’s a Chamber of Commerce day here in St Petersburg! It isn’t snowing… the sun is shining, the birds are singing and 57 teams are here…waiting for wind... there is not a breath of air. We were postponed at 9am until 1pm and still are under postponement until at least 3:30pm. The forecast for the remainder of the weekend isn’t much better.
The Welcome Party last night was a great success. Aside from the yummy mashed potatoes and the make your own ice cream sundaes the big hit was the Minute to Win it games! We had competitors, stacking nuts on top of each other with chop sticks and cups on top of pizza boxes among many other crazy and zany tasks. Those that were successful with their tasks within a minute won a fabulous prize – an official ILCA Frisbee!
The Southern Circuit Series Scores through 7 races, including 1 throw out are as follows:
1. Jody Lutz, Jay Lutz, Derek Gauger – 15 pts
2. Todd Wake, Kristine Wake, Neil Fowler – 29 pts
3. Josh Goldman, Jo Ann Fisher, Jeff Eiber – 31 pts
4. Kirk Reynolds, Morley Flynn, Pat O’Connor – 45 pts
5. David Starck, Joe Starck, PJ Schaffer, Jody Starck, Mark Sertl – 45 pts

Today concluded the 2011 Lightning Southern Circuit. Due to the lack of wind over the past two days and earlier warning signal for the first start had many competitors were putting their boats in the water as the full moon was still setting this morning. It was a beautiful morning on Tampa Bay and we were able to get in two races. The results are attached. More commentary and pictures to come.....
