2010 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship– preview

The 2010 edition of the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship in Ridgeway, Canada is being held at the Buffalo Canoe Club and is preparing to name a new champion – with the current World Champion Bruno Bethlem of Brazil in attendance as well former Snipe World Champions Augie Diaz & Tomos Hornos, both of the US, competition is stiff.

With 40 teams representing 10 nations, the waters of Lake Erie will be teaming with anticipation when racing begins on August 31. The sailors stretched their legs during the practice race held on Lake Erie with PRO David Sprague and his team running the race course and although the conditions were light with 5-6 knots of breeze, the entire fleet was on the line.

Regatta chairman David Starck commented "the weather forecast looks great for the competitors this week. The teams have been here training for several days now and everyone has been enjoying the conditions. With 40 boats from 10 countries represented, the Buffalo Canoe Club looks forward to providing excellent racing.”

The carrot for the winning team is an automatic berth to the Snipe World Championship to be sailed in Rungsted, Denmark in 2011. The WH&O is a qualifying event – whereby each country is able to send a set number of teams plus a junior and women’s team.

2010 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship– Day 1

Tough at the Top

The days racing for the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Champs looked bleak with the first start postponed due to a lack of wind. But a little patience and a move of the race course closer to shore by IRO David Sprague brought the Championship to flat waters with 9-11 knots of breeze and light but beautiful conditions.

It’s tough at the top and after only 2 races 1 point separates the top 3 and another tight spread in the next tier. Alexandre Tinoco and Gabriel Borges of Brazil started off the regatta rounding the weather mark in first and extending their lead to lead wire to wire. Multi-world Champ Augie Diaz with Kathleen Tocke crewing (USA) finished second and after 2 races the 2 teams are tied for first. Youngsters Raul Rios and Marcos Teixidor of Puerto Rico led race 2 from start to finish and also extended their lead significantly to take the 2nd race win.

With the course moved closer to shore, the right was a bit favored with the wind coming from the west off the point. However the second race the velocity built and the fleet could be seen spread fairly evenly across the course. Junichiro Shiraishi and Kogi Saito and teammates Shinichi and Michiko Uchida from Japan excelled in the lighter air to finish 2nd & 3rd in race 2.

Conditions for tomorrow’s racing is expected to be more of the same with a slight increase in velocity predicted.

2010 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship– Day 2

Making a Statement

Ernesto Rodriguez and Mary Hall of the US have made a statement after the 2nd day of racing at the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championships in Canada. With a 2-1-1, their finishes have vaulted them to the top of the leaderboard with a 12-point lead over their fellow Miami sailors Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke.

When asked about his day, Ernesto commented, “It was pretty good actually. The first race we had a good start and rounded the first mark in 7 or 8th and played the right pretty good to pay off. I was a bit skeptical from the beginning, but it paid off. In the second race the breeze shifted to the left a bit with more pressure. We had a great start at the pin and gave us a good jump on the fleet and the pin was favored on top of that so we got 3-4 boat lengths right away. The last race was a bit of luck. We didn’t have the time and we thought we were over, so we went back and ducked the whole fleet and the starboard tack was not the way to go, but our luck paid off and we went toward the right and started getting headed 10 degrees and we tacked and crossed the fleet.”

Junichiro Shiraishi and Kogj Saito of Japan are in third and ISAF Youth World sailors Raul Rios and Marcos Teixidor of Puerto Rico in 4th. Current Snipe World champion Bruno Bethlem with Rodrigo Lins (BRA) round out the top 5.

Conditions for the day began at 7 knots and increased to 12 with Lake Erie kicking up the chop and swell. Tomorrows forecast is more of the same with a possible weather change on Friday.

2010 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship– Day 3

Rodriguez & Hall Continue Winning Ways

Day 3 of the Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championships could not have gotten any better for regatta leaders Ernesto Rodriguez and Mary Hall of the US. Continuing on a winning streak, the duo posted a 1-2-1 to give them a significant lead over the fleet. With one race left in the Championship and the possibility of a second discard race, the regatta is virtually done for these two.

Lake Erie served up another stellar day of wind and slight chop challenging the sailors to stay powered up for the long windward-leeward courses. A moderate 8-12 knots was seen on the course. Rodriguez and Hall could be found rounding the first weather mark near the top and then using their speed and tactics to edge out the win or 2nd place finish. Their only loss today was to Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke of the US.

Brazilians Rafael Gagliotti and Andre Urbina were on the march today with a second and what seemed to be a race win, but an OCS and a deep last race have pushed them back. Day one leader Alexandre Tinoco and Gabriel Borges of Brazil found their groove back and moved up to sit 3rd overall.

The forecast for tomorrow may have some rain and significantly more wind for the final race and a second discard counted in may mix up the standings behind Rodriguez/Hall.

2010 Snipe Western Hemisphere & Orient Championship– Final

Rodriguez & Hall Confirm They Are Champions

Ernesto Rodriguez and Mary Hall of the US sailed the last race of the Championship and confirmed they are the true champions by winning the last race. With a storm brewing, the wind was strong out of the south with 12-19 knots and good size swells. Alexandre Tinoco and Gabriel Borges of Brazil led the race today but Rodriguez and Hall passed them at the gybe mark and continued to the finish. This is Rodriguez’ first major international win in the Snipe having already secured the US National Championship.

Both second and third place also confirmed their overall places with Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke of the US 2nd in the race and 2nd overall and Bruno Bethlem and Rodrigo Lins of Brazil finishing 3rd in the race and 3rd overall.

Top junior competitor Raul Rios and Marcos Teixidor of Puerto Rico, who competed in the ISAF Youth Worlds, finished 6th overall. The top female team was the sister duo from Argentina, Trixy Agusti and YuYu Agusti who were also the 2nd junior team and finished 18th overall.

The 40 boat fleet representing 10 countries and 4 continents was highly competitive and also a country qualifier for the Pan Am Games to be held in Mexico in 2011. Rodriguez and Hall have also earned a berth with this win for the 2011 Snipe Worlds to be held in Rungsted, Denmark.
