I think the race will survive as long as the conditions are challenging. The 05/06 race had plenty of important moments outside of the Southern Ocean - it did not need that leg to be a successful event. What the next edition needs to be wary of is too many legs like Leg 8 and 9 with drifting winds.
Ellen MacArthur's recent boondoggle trip thru Asia to set "records" was all about exposing her boat's sponsor to that market. She regularly commented about crummy sailing conditions... that's what would really pull the Volvo Ocean Race down.
