I think the race will survive as long as the conditions are challenging. The 05/06 race had plenty of important moments outside of the Southern Ocean - it did not need that leg to be a successful event. What the next edition needs to be wary of is too many legs like Leg 8 and 9 with drifting winds. Ellen MacArthur's recent boondoggle trip thru Asia to set "records" was all about exposing her boat's sponsor to that market.
