From Jeff Brown, Stamford, CT (re, Scuttlebutt 3136):

Re “the Passing of Master Navigator Mau Piailug “, Rick Delfosse (friend and former Sound Spars/Spar Craft Port Washington NY Manager) recanted the tale of Mr. Marvin Cramer, a NJ sailor who used Polynesian seafaring techniques (no electronics), to sail his boat “Globe Star” around the world, In the early 1980’s, Mr. Cramer came to Sound Spars, looking for a mast donation. Sound Spars was not in a position to donate a spar at that time but they all wished him a hearty “good luck!”

Marvin Cramer completed his 17-month circumnavigation voyage from 12-15-82 to 5-20-84, using only Polynesian Seafaring techniques. There was a 25-year celebration of his voyage and several websites carried stories and announcements about the 25-year celebration. Mark Pillsbury wrote "A Toast to Marvin" in the May 2009 blog and June 2009 issue of Cruising World. Rick sent me an interesting link to the “Globe Star” voyage website and the 25-year celebration party, in NJ: http://www.globestar.org/.

Rick (now a Coast Guard Certified Captain and Licensed US Sailing Instructor) currently heads up the “Connecticut Community Boating Organization”, a Bridgeport CT based 501c3 public charity, dedicated to offering area residents affordable and fun public access to Long Island Sound by teaching them how to sail and teaching safe-boating courses. Their Motto: No Child Left Ashore! They welcome contributions, grant opportunities, corporate sponsorships and monitory or boat donations. Their contact info is: CT Community Boating, 1494 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604/ P. 203-382-3661; Website: www.ctcommunityboating.org and Email: rickd.ctcommunityboating@gmail.com
