Hey Lil'Cur, had to send a correction on when the first Operation Sail was held in NY Harbor. I happily remember it having happened in the early sixties as I was not allowed to accompany my folks on the press boat, a harbor tug supplied by either Moran or MacAllister Tugs. Our family did a road trip to New London and were treated to a vip tour aboard the "Gorch Foch" , the sail-training vessel of the then West German Navy, and also view two other major participants of the first Operation Sail. If I am not mistaken, the event was the dream/brainchild of well-known maritime historian/artist Frank Braynard of Sea Cliff, NY. His dedication/fascination/obsession to the "tall ships" was evident in his backyard display of the carved name board from the transom off one of the greats. I can't recall which one as it was lovingly shown to my Dad and me well over 40 years ago.
