OLDEST TROPHY RACES Log-In to Post/Reply

The Northeast Harbor Fleet in Maine just completed the 85th consecutive (without interruption) George Davenport Hayward Cup Race, dating back to 1925. This is an annual all-club pursuit race involving any of the one-design keelboats that were ever given a OD start by the club including: A Boats, B. Boats, 30 square meters, MDI's, Bullseyes, International One-Designs, Luder-16s, Mercury's, J/24's, J/22's and Solings. Slowest handicapped boat starts first, first across the line wins. It would be interesting to know what other yacht clubs:

(1) Have a trophy that has been raced for every year since 1925 (or earlier) without interruption, e.g the winner each year for 85 years or more is engraved on the trophy?
(2) Are there any other trophies dating back to 1925 or earlier that have been conducted as a pursuit race, or is this the oldest pursuit race sailed for 85 consecutive years on record?

Here are some that were emailed to Scuttlebutt:

* From Bill Sills, Past Commodore & Multiple Winner:
The General Philip H. Sheridan Race Regatta Trophy began in 1874 at Geneva Lake Yacht Club. The club later merged with the West End Yacht Club to form the Lake Geneva Yacht Club
Fontana-On-Geneva Lake, Wisconsin. Originally raced in Sandbaggers and currently in A scows.

* From Vincent Delany:
We in the Waterwag Club, Dun Laoghaire, Ireland have many trophies which we race for every year since 1887 such as the Jubilee Cup which celebrates Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887. The Cup was presented by Thomas Middleton who insisted that it would be a Cup of no value but with a large surface area on which the engrave the names of the prizewinners. Due to the unfortunate interruption of World War 1, no competitors were available for sailing between 1915 and 1918. Our trophies for handicap races were not introduced until the 1930's. A handicap race allows slower boats to start first with faster boats on the race course for a shorter length of time.

* From Ray Cullum, Rear Commodore, Beverly Yacht Club:
The Beverly Yacht Club in Marion, MA offers the Van Rensselaer Memorial Trophy. This trophy has been competed for annually (except for WWI & WWII) beginning in 1896 and is open to all Buzzards Bay yachts. I am sure it has been raced under different formats over the years but it has been raced for a number of years as a pursuit race.

* From Tony Bull:
Organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria and covering some 198nm, the Kidder Williams M2L, is in fact the world’s fifth oldest race. The inaugural race of 1907 used the same course as today - Port Phillip Heads to Low Head at the mouth of the Tamar River.

* From Leslie Barkow:
The Inland Lake Yachting Assoc A-Scow fleet has been sailing for the P.A. Valentine Trophy since 1911.

* From Dennis Palmer:
Regarding long running races, the Lipton Cup has been contested every year in Seattle, WA since 1912.

* From Mike Esposito:
Chicago Yacht Club's original Chicago to Mackinac Trophy dates to 1906 and has been awarded every year since 1921 (races were skipped in 1917-1920 due to WW I, but were sailed every year of WW II). I believe the Bayview Yacht Club's Port Huron to Mackinac Race has sailed since 1925, but I don't know the history of their trophy. Milwaukee's South Shore Yacht Club's Queen's Cup trophy was the 2nd place trophy for an 1853 yacht race that pretty much followed the course on which the America won its famous trophy, but it has only been used for their annual Lake Michigan race since 1944.

*From Lee Parks:
US SAILING’s oldest trophies, the Sears Cup for the Chubb U.S. Junior Triplehanded Sailing Championship (1921) and the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy for the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship (1924), are slightly older but neither were sailed during the WWII years (1942-45).

* From Robert Coulson:
The annual Chowder Race held each fall by Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA, if still going, may well have started before 1925. It was going strong back in the early thirties when I was a young competitor. It was a chase race for all sorts of boats, ending with a cup of hot chowder for the competitors, served at the Club.

Here are some more:

* From Kirk Robertson:
Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa, Ont. has the following trophies dating back to 1905,1918, and 1919 respectively. These races have been continually run since their presentation.
  • Edwin L. Brittain Trophy presented in 1905 - originally and currently awarded for a race from the Britannia Yacht Club to Pinhey's Point and return - Elapsed Time.
  • J.G. Hickson Memorial Cup presented in 1918 - awarded to the keelboat champion in the weekly series racing (now Class 5)
  • Lt. Col. C. E. Long Trophy presented in 1919 - originally and currently awarded for a race between BYC and Armitage's Wharf - Elapsed Time.
* From Michele Copeland:
Ponsonby Cruising Club in Auckland New Zealand has raced every year since 1922 for the Lipton Cup, presented by Sir Thomas Lipton for an annual inter-club challenge race. It is not a pursuit race but is awarded to first on line. It is competed for by mullet boats which are unique to NZ. The winner's name is engraved on a special silver plaque each year and attached to the wooden base of the trophy.

Re: [Bob Johnstone] OLDEST TROPHY RACES [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

Gibson Island Yacht Squadron (Md.) has a long history of yachting on the Chesapeake. This year we hosted the 75th Annual J. Rulon Miller Series for Stars (first held in 1934). Our Star fleet (Chesapeake Bay Fleet) has been around since 1923 when the "rainbow fleet" of multicolored Stars was established. They were all named for fish. "Trout" still sails on the Magothy River, still owned by the same family.
I have a wonderful very small edition book published by the GIYS Star Fleet in the 1930's about it's "early years". Wonderful stories about it's beginnings, characters and great old Star photos. We also have some movie footage of the Star Internationals hosted at Gibson Island in 1930. There is a short sequence there also of the J class boats in the America's Cup and a wonderful short scene with a young Olin Stephens at Gibson Island at the start of the Gibson Island - New London Race (which ultimately became the Annapolis Newport Race).
Regards,
TP

A few weeks ago, competing on behalf of the St. Francis Yacht Club, we won the Manhasset Bay Challenge Cup, started in 1902, and raced annually since then – thought by the Manhasset Bay YC to be the oldest annually competed challenge cup in US sailing. We competed in J/105s and are taking it back to San Francisco Bay, where we will hold the next event in Etchells next October.

I have attached the Declaration of Trust documenting the Cup.

All the best,

Bruce J. Stone

Re: [The Publisher] OLDEST TROPHY RACES [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

A few years back in 2002, I was at my estate lawyer in Boynton Beach, Florida going over some things in my father's will. We got talking about a few things and told him I was interested in sailing. His office was really to big for his needs. He wanted to show me something that had to do with sailing. It was a silver trophy. It stood at least 6' high. all silver. It was about 2' around. had years dating back to the mid-1830's, and I dont remember correctly but had inscription: NORTH AMERICAN CHALLENGE CUP OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT from Yacht club in the New York area and/or the Northeast of the U.S. I had only saw it for a few minutes but was in awe. I have only seen pictures of America's Cup and thought this trophy was equivalent. I went back a month later and the trophy had been removed and being a lawyer he could not tell me were it went. My Estate Lawyer had a lot of clients from Palm Beach, Manalapan, Ocean Ridge, Gulfstream, Florida. After reading #2954 letters and forums Eric Robbins. Oldest Trophies. I wish I could tell you more or have a pic for you. But it is what it is. I just had to say something. I wish I had more time and always wondered what happened to it.
