News Release

New IRC 35 Fleet Forming on Long Island Sound

The IRC 35 class is being formed to bring together boats with similar ratings and sailing characteristics to foster close racing and greater participation. The idea is to encompass boats rating between 1.020 to 1.060 that are between 34 and 38 feet. American Yacht Club already recognized our fleet and gave a small, but very tight fleet, which makes the racing a lot of fun.

Boats included are: J/35s, X35s, Beneteau 36.7s, Tripp 36s, J/109s (one-design sails or bigger sails), J/37s, Express 37s, C&C 115s and X38s. We are also sailing with the Corby 33 Eclipse. This list is not exclusive, we are looking expand the fleet to include as many classes and boats as possible.

Our first big event will be the Larchmont YC Edlu Race. It appears we will have a 10 boat division. The race is a short distance race, that takes the premium off crew work and lets crews sail in a more relaxed atmosphere. The race is 16 miles from Larchmont to Gong 11B off of Eaton's Neck and back. Following the race we will get together to talk about forming the class and selecting regattas we would like to sail as a class. Seeing that the Beneteau 36.7s and the J/109s have active one-design schedules, we will try to pick events that complement their calendars, rather than conflict with them.

IRC allows owners to escape strict one-design limitations and configure sail plans to optimize performance under the rule. We expect the IRC 35 schedule will offer a variety of courses ranging from classic windward leewards, to distance races using traditional or pursuit starts. IRC is designed to rate a boat on all points of sail. We believe the different course configurations and more flexible sail inventories will provide owners and crews with new challenges and enhance our collective sailing experience.

Please consider joining the IRC 35 Class. We expect to have a lot of fun racing and learning from each other! If you have any questions please contact Adam Loory (
