MASCALZONE LATINO AUDI TEAM

UNVEILS ITS PLANS

Milan, February 4th 2010

Two of the best known names in the yachting world have chosen to join forces, creating the Mascalzone Latino Audi Team.

“I am very proud of the fact that Audi, a prestigious car company with such great tradition in sponsoring the sailing world, has chosen to link its name to Mascalzone Latino”, commented Vincenzo Onorato. “I would like to thank the President of the Volkswagen Group, Dr. Tartaglione, the Director of Audi Italy, Dr. Frisch and the Director of Audi Marketing, Dr Migliorini for the trust they have put in us. We share the values of excellence and of fair competition as an incentive to constant improvement, as individuals, as a team and from a technology development point of view.”

Vincenzo Onorato's team will be racing in several classes and on different race courses, focusing mainly on the Louis Vuitton Trophy, on the one-design Farr 40 and on the Melges 32 class.

The World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA) and Louis Vuitton have announced the next venues of the Louis Vuitton Trophy for 2010 and early 2011. The Louis Vuitton Pacific Series took place in Auckland in February of last year and the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in Nice in November 2009. The format calls for two weeks of match racing (one on one duel) with America's Cup Class yachts provided by the organization.

Participating teams, top professionals in the sailing world who for the most part have matured experience in previous America's Cup campaigns, rotate on board during individual “flights”. A “flight” is jargon for a single race, in which teams display their seamanship skills and tactical intelligence. Emirates Team New Zealand will host the next leg of the Trophy, taking place from the 9th to the 21st of March in Auckland.

Italy will then host the European leg at La Maddalena in Sardinia. Mascalzone Latino Audi Team will be doing the honors from the 22nd of May to the 6th of June. Third on the calendar, the Middle Eastern stop-over in Dubai from the 13th to the 28th of November followed by China in 2011. Racing will take place in Hong Kong from the 9th to the 24th of January.

“La Maddalena will be at the center of media interest right at the beginning of the summer season and attention will be directed to the new infrastructure created for the G8 summit, later transferred to L'Aquila for the well-known reasons”, underlined Vincenzo Onorato. He then continued: “This success was possible thanks to the decisions taken by the Government and by Dr Guido Bertolaso, who has asked me to coordinate the event. As the “hosting team”, Audi Mascalzone Latino Team wants to offer all competitors the best hospitality. My heart full thanks also goes to those who welcomed us, the Region of Sardinia, that is sponsoring our team in all stages of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, and that here is represented at the highest institutional level by the President of the Region Ugo Cappellacci. Sardinia is a region with an enormous untapped potential, both in terms of nautical tourism and of all it offers as a whole. The interior landscape is extraordinary, but still unknown to most. The Louis Vuitton Trophy is a global event and Sardinia will have the opportunity of being added by travelers to their “Italian Grand Tour”.

THE TEAM

The team selected by the Vice President of Mascalzone Latino Team Audi, Marco Savelli, for the Louis Vuitton Trophy, numbers some confirmations and many high ranking new arrivals. The talented New Zealander Gavin Brady will be Skipper and helmsman. At his side calling tactics Morgan Larson and former "scoundrel" Cameron Dunn in the role of strategist.

The afterguard is completed by Steve Hayles, navigator, Mark Mendelblatt, mainsail traveller, and Italian Flavio Favini, in the delicate role as mainsail trimmer, who was on board also in Mascalzone’s two previous America’s Cup campaigns.

Vincenzo Onorato will also be on board, manning the runners and always available to his crew for any need. Rob Salthouse, on Puma during the last VOR, and Flavio Grassi, an “old hat” at Mascalzone Latino, are the headsail (jib & spinnaker) trimmers.

Four grinders will provide the power necessary to rapidly move the huge sail plan. They are all experienced sailors and Cup veterans: Scott Crawford, Xavier Giambi, Massimo Gherarducci and Andrea Pavan. Jamie Gale is on the halyards and finally Chris McDougall and Greg Gendell will be working the bow. Chris Larson is the team’s coach, while Denmark's Jes Gram-Hansen is the match race specialist, who will follow the team around the world, interpreting the complicated rules that govern this type of racing.

“This is a high-profile team that needs some settling in. Victories in yachting come from the crew as a whole and not from individual champions”, commented Vincenzo Onorato. “This is why, in view of the next race in New Zealand, we plan to re-open our base in Valencia between the 11th and 17th of February for a training session. I would like to point out that Mascalzone Latino Audi Team will be flying the Club Nautico Roma pennant. The Club is chaired by Claudio Gorelli, to whom I am very grateful for all the support shown.” Vincenzo Onorato concluded adding: “Since dressing and eating is the core of human well-being, I would like to acknowledge our official suppliers’ important contributions. Kappa for clothing, both on board and on land. After the success of the line produced for the 32nd America's Cup, the Turin-based company is preparing a new Mascalzone Latino Audi team branded clothing collection. Last but not least, thanks to Ligabue Catering, our historic catering and service partner on board the Moby ship fleet.”

TEAM QUICK FACTS

GAVIN BRADY- SKIPPER and HELMSMAN
Kiwi, 37 years old, Gavin literally grew up at sea. His family lived on a boat that followed the father's trawler from harbor to harbor. Mascalzone Latino Audi Team’s skipper talent emerged at the RNZL Yacht Squadron’s “Youth Match Race Program” in Auckland. He also owes much to yacht-owner Karl Kwok’s support, who always entrusted him with his Beau Geste yachts. Brady’s victory in the Congressional Cup in '96 went down in the history of match racing, a victory he defended the following year. Gavin made his debut in the Cup in 1995 as Chris Dickson’s tactician on Tag Heuer. He was also at Dickson’s side during BMW Oracle’s campaign in Valencia. In 2000 Brady raced on America One and 2003 he sailed with Luna Rossa. He won the Sydney to Hobart in 1997 and The Admiral's Cup in 1999. Brady has also sailed in two round the world races, the Whitbread 1997-98 and the VOR in 2001-2002. Gavin Brady has won 4 world titles and competed in the Sydney Olympics in the Star class.

MORGAN LARSON - TACTICIAN
Born in Santa Cruz California, 38 years old, Larson can boast experience in four America’s Cup campaigns. Morgan has won three Maxi World Championships, lists just as many victories in the Transpac Regatta and won one edition of the Admiral’s Cup. In between-the-marks racing he has won a 505 World Championship, and an Audi MedCup on a Tp52. In 2008 Larson was instrumental to Mascalzone Latino’s Farr40 World Championship victory in Miami.

CAMERON DUNN – STRATEGIST, RUNNERS
Born in Auckland 38 years ago, Dunn’s experience is too great to be condensed in a few lines: it ranges from dinghy sailing to Maxi yachts, from Ocean racing to Match Races. Cameron is usually part of the afterguard, as tactician, helmsman and mostly as strategist which is the role he will play on MLAT. Dunn made his Cup debut on Abracadabra 2000 in 1999-2000. He then sailed with BMW Oracle until 2003 when he joined Mascalzone Latino for the 32nd edition of the America’s Cup. In 2009 Cameron took part in the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Auckland and in Nice with BMW Oracle.

FLAVIO FAVINI – MAINSAIL TRIMMER
Flavio, nicknamed “Favonio”, is 47 years old, and has participated in two America’s Cup campaigns; in Auckland (2002-2003) and in Valencia in 2007 on Mascalzone Latino with the role of tactician and helmsman. For many years Favini sailed in Olympic classes and in 1995 he secured the Italian victory in the Admiral’s Cup at the helm of Capricorno. Favini has reaped countless victories on Minitonner, J22, Quarter Tonner, 6 meter SI, Mumm 30, Ims, Farr 40 and Melges 24 classes. Altogether Flavio has won 8 World Championships, 3 European titles and 20 national championships.

MARK MENDELBLATT – TRAVELLER and UP-RIG MAN
Mark’s sailing career has the most widely spread Olympic dinghy at its core: the Laser. Mendelblatt was vice World Champion in 2004 and competed in the Athens Olympics after having been one of the leaders on the American circuit. Mark took part in the 2002-2003 edition of the America’s Cup as a One World team member. He then went back to sailing in Olympic classes, this time on the Star dinghy. Mendelblatt won the Bacardi Cup (2005), the European Championship in 2006 as well as the Kielwoche regatta. Mark reaped a double victory in the prestigious St.Moritz match race as a skipper and he won the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2007 with Emirates Team New Zealand. Mendelblatt has also raced on Maxis, Farr 40s and on the Tp52 Quantum Racing. On Mascalzone Latino, Mark will be working the mainsail traveller, but most of all, he will be the man up the rig, reading the telltale wind signs, as he sits 35 meters above his teammates.

STEVE HAYLES - NAVIGATOR
British, Steve would have probably become a professional soccer player if, inspired by Sir Francis Chichester’s writings, he hadn’t embarked upon his first round-the-world race at a very young age in 1993. Hayles took part in all the editions of the VOR until 2007, five in total, specializing in the role of navigator. Steve then worked for two years at BMW Oracle and was the navigator on board the TP52 Matador in the Audi MedCup and on the Minimaxi Ran with which he won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Fastnet Race.

FLAVIO GRASSI - TRIMMER
Flavio, 41 years old, comes from Sanremo and has won many Italian dinghy championships. Grassi competed in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona in the Flying Dutchman class and in 2004 in Athens in the Star class. Flavio victories include 3 World, 7 European and 14 Italian Championship titles. He participated in Mascalzone Latino’s 31st America’s Cup campaign in Auckland and in the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia.

ROB SALTHOUSE - TRIMMER
Rob, a forty four year old Kiwi, is an expert in sail design and construction and has been racing professionally for almost 30 years. Salthouse has sailed in many of the most important regattas; the Sydney to Hobart, eight times; the Admiral’s Cup, five times; the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001/2002 on Tyco and in 2008/2009 on Puma. He also took part in four America’s Cup campaigns, all with Team New Zealand (1987, 1989, 1992 and 2007).

MASSIMO GHERARDUCCI – MAINSAIL GRINDER
Massimo was born in La Spezia 33 years ago. He achieved great results in the Finn class, participated in the Sydney 2000 Olympic campaign as a sparring partner and is an athlete of the Italian Navy team. Gherarducci took part in two America’s Cup editions on board Luna Rossa in 2002-2003 and in 2007. He is an Audi MedCup veteran, where he raced for five years with the Audi Tp52 Sailing Team. Massimo won the Panerai Vele d’Epoca circuit as Chaplin’s tactician, a classical yacht that belongs to the Italian Navy.

ANDREA PAVAN - GRINDER
37 years old, Andrea lives in Mira, close to Venice. He was on board Luna Rossa as a grinder in 2004, and raced with Mascalzone Latino from 2005 to 2007. Pavan took part in the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Auckland with Shosholoza (2009) and in Nice he was on board All4One. Unlike many grinders who have no background in sailing, Andrea can cover many different roles on board; in 2009 he was the man up the rig during the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series.

SCOTT CRAWFORD - GRINDER
Scott comes from New Zealand and is 37 years old. He is one of the best-known and top-performing grinders in the world. He has collected many victories during his sailing career: the Sydney to Hobart, the Rolex Fastnet, the Channel Race, the Rolex Newport to Bermuda just to name a few. Crawford also won the Rolex Maxi World Championship twice and the 12 meter SI Worlds & North American Championships. Scott took part in the last two editions of the America’s Cup. In 2003 he was with One World Challenge and in 2007 with BMW Oracle Racing.

SAVERIO GIAMBI - GRINDER
Florentine, 44 years old, Saverio was a grinder on board Mascalzone Latino during the America’s Cup campaign in Auckland and LV Act 4 and 5 in Valencia. Giambi won the Copa del Rey on Mascalzone Latino-Breeze and has raced on many Maxis including Idea, My Song and Cuordileone. Saverio also won the Barcolana in 2004 on board Alfa Romeo 1.

JAMIE GALE - PITMAN
Jamie was born in Auckland 38 years ago and now lives in Falmouth, USA, with his family. He has collected many wins in Ocean racing, among which the VOR victory in 2002 on Illbruck, the edition where his team set the new record of miles covered in 24 hours. Gale competed twice in the Olympics; in 1996 in the Soling class and in 2000 in the Star class. He was a part of the victorious Team New Zealand crew in 1992 and 1995, when the Kiwis took the Cup to Auckland. In 2000 Jamie raced with Young America and that same year he won the IMS 50’ World Championship. He was nominated Yachtsman of the Year in New Zealand in 1995.

CHRIS DOUGALL – MID-BOW
Thirty-nine years old, Australian, Chris has raced all over the world, covering over 200.000 miles and collecting many titles from 1991 to today. For many years Dougall specialized in Maxi Yachts, taking part in 14 World Championships. He has sailed on the ORMA 60 trimaran, on Shockwave Alfa Romeo, on the Minimaxi Ran and more recently on Tp52s during the Audi MedCup. Chris was a part of the Mascalzone Latino Team during the 32nd America’s Cup campaign.

GREG GENDELL - BOWMAN
Greg comes from Annapolis in the US and is 39 years old. He has raced with great success in different classes, collecting many American titles, 4 World Championship victories and winning the Tp52 World Championship and the MedCup. Gendell sailed the oceans competing in the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1997-98 and took part in two America’s Cup campaigns; Abracadabra 2000 and Stars & Stripes in 2003.

CHRIS LARSON – COACH
The “ Scoundrels’ ” coach is 43 years old, American, and is the current Melges 24 World Champion. Chris has won seven other World titles in the J/22, J/24 ,Mumm 36, Swan 45 and Maxi classes. Larson competed in the America’s Cup on board Abracadabra in 2000 and took part in the 2001-2002 VOR edition on Assa Abloy. Chris also won the 1997 edition of the Admiral’s Cup. That same year Larson was nominated Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

JES GRAM-HANSEN – MATCH RACING RULE ADVISOR
Jes Gram-Hansen, the 38 year old Dane, exemplifies northern European Match Racing. Jes will be at the team’s side, explaining the technical subtleties of match racing. In this discipline instinctive tactical choices are paramount to winning, but victory is also based on an excellent understanding of the complex rules coupled with outstanding boat handling. During the 32nd America’s Cup Gram-Hansen was Mascalzone Latino’s starting helmsman.

VINCENZO ONORATO

Neapolitan, 52, with a degree in Maritime Economics, Vincenzo Onorato is primarily a man of the sea. A fourth-generation ship owner, Vincenzo Onorato devoted himself to the consolidation and diversification of the family business. In 1982, he founded the “Moby” ferry line, which now has 36 ships operating on maritime routes between Italy’s mainland and Sardinia, Elba and Corsica. Recently a new line was been inaugurated, that links Italy directly to France, with a departure from Toulon. The fleet transports five million passengers a year and is the leader in routes serving Sardinia. The Moby tugboat division is often at the forefront of rescue operations and marine environmental damage mitigation.

Vincenzo Onorato is the President of Mascalzone Latino, the sailing team he founded in 1993. His preparation, his passion and his seafaring spirit have enabled him every year to face new challenges with grit and determination, which has in turn resulted in ever-growing success and in Mascalzone Latino becoming one of the sailing world’s top teams. Onorato has led two America's Cup campaigns (2002-2003 and 2007) and on his sailing palmarès there are 6 World Champion titles, including three consecutive Farr40 Class ones (2006, 2007 and 2008). Mascalzone Latino is the only team to have achieved the three-in-a-row result in one of the most competitive One Design classes. Onorato also won the IMS Mumm30 World Championships in 2000 and the Sardinia Cup ISAF Team Offshore World Championship in 2006. Other victories in prestigious races include the Giraglia Rolex Cup, the Regata dei Tre Golfi in Naples and the Copa del Rey in Palma. In 2007, following the many victories, Vincenzo Onorato was nominated Sailor of the Year, and in 2008 he received the nomination as ISAF Rolex Sailor of the Year.

One the projects he cherishes the most is certainly the Mascalzone Latino Sailing School, which offers new motivation and the goal of a better life to children living in rough areas of Naples. This initiative is supported by the Vodafone Italy Foundation in collaboration with the Italian Navy that has put some of its facilities located in Naples at the school’s disposal. The Mascalzone Latino Sailing School is sponsored by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Youth and the Social Action Department of the national Italian television RAI. Ferrero Kinder + Sport also supports the project.

In 2009 Vincenzo Onorato made his successful debut at the helm of the Melges 32 and in the Farr 40 season, always achieving a level of excellence. The same year, the Italian government entrusted him with the logistical and organizational coordination that will support the Italian stop-over of Louis Vuitton Trophy scheduled to take place at La Maddalena in Sardinia in May-June 2010.

A little known fact about him is his career as a writer. Mondadori published Vincenzo Onorato’s last two novels, “Floyd Frugo a no global fairy tale” in 2003 and “Red color of the ocean” in 2005.
