LOUIS VUITTON WORLD SERIES, A WORLD FIRST

Paris, September 2nd 2009

Some of the best professional sailing teams, grouped together under the name WSTA (World Sailing Team Association), and Louis Vuitton, a key player in the world of top-level sailing for more than 25 years, today announced the creation of an international regatta circuit.

The WSTA (World Sailing Team Association) groups together the participants in previous Louis Vuitton Cup regattas (K-Challenge (France), BMW Oracle Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand, Mascalzone Latino (Italy)) and welcomes newcomers such as Team Artemis (Sweden), Team Synergy (Russia), Team French Spirit (France) and Joe Fly Italia (Italy). Other teams will join the association in the coming weeks.

Entitled the Louis Vuitton World Series, these regattas are a first in the world of sailing and follow on from the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series organised in Auckland, New Zealand, last February. The global success of this exceptional competition persuaded all the partners in this adventure to create a dynamic and ambitious new race programme based on the same concept and format.

10 teams will be invited to confront each other in successive duels over a fortnight on two pairs of identical boats chosen by lot. The racing boats were sailed in the 2007 LV Cup. This concept, which demonstrates the desire to return to the original spirit of “match racing”, provides an exhilarating show and is easy for spectators to understand.

The WSTA and Louis Vuitton plan to organise several regattas a year. Many cities of which Nice, Hong Kong, Auckland, Newport and other European venues have shown their interest.

A press conference will be held in Paris on Tuesday September 8th. More details about the first event to be organised in 2009 will be disclosed during this conference.

Re: [The Publisher] Louis Vuitton Trophy [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

Has any consideration been given to how the new World Sailing Team Association (WSTA) is part of the current issue of ISAF and the America’s Cup community dealing in secret? Let me explain....

ISAF as a WGO (governing organization) has certain rights over the sport that come with an obiligation to its members. Part of that as we know is to negotiate fair media rights for ISAF sanctioned events and to regulate members whether they are amateur, pro-am or pro in the current make up of sailing.

With the formation of WSTA it becomes very important to know how ISAF is representing the members in the AC secret agreement. The AC secret agreement has the potential to be the tip of the iceberg and a benchmark in how ISAF will represent the members in dealing with the WSTA.

The WSTA has the potential to benefit or harm the sport of sailing in many ways depending on how ISAF handles it. There have been many examples of breakaway leagues battling with their WGO, but will ISAF handle it? Also, how will ISAF regulate the owners of these leagues? How will ISAF regulate the pros in these leagues if at all? How will ISAF work with the sailors if they form a Collective Bargaining Unit (CBU)?

In other WGO's they have limited power over the leagues unless they are using their rules. WGO's have more power over players from pro leagues as they are restricted in how they participate in the amateur side of the sport if at all. Football (soccer) and Ice Hockey are very restrictive on how pros interact with amateurs because these amateur clubs developed these pro players and in some cases are entitled to fees for their work.

Most importantly is how will the amateur side of sailing benefit from a pro league. If ISAF can barely get media rights out of the last AC which had revenues in the multi-millions, what is ISAF going to get from these pro leagues to benefit the grassroots of sailing? One only has to look at FIFA to see how a sport has grown by a WGO doing a good job. Hence what is going on now with SNG and ISAF is very, very important to what has just come over the horizon in the way of the WSTA.

End of rant & I greatly appreciate what both you have done for the sport. I've been in & around the sport for 4 decades & I'm really happy to see the important role the media has in shaping & developing the sport for the kids. I only wish ISAF could do the same.

Two more entries for Louis Vuitton Trophy - Nice.

The World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA) and Louis Vuitton are
delighted to announce the addition of two world-class sailing teams
for the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta to be held in Nice next month
(7th to 22d November). This brings the regatta total to eight
confirmed teams, which is the ideal number for end-of-summer
expected weather conditions.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome TeamOrigin, the British team
led by Sir Keith Mills, which becomes a preferential shareholder in
WSTA and intends to compete at all of the Louis Vuitton regattas
over the next 12 months,” says Laurent Esquier, CEO WSTA.

TeamOrigin, skippered by three-times Olympic gold medallist Ben
Ainslie with two-times Olympic gold medallist Iain Percy as
tactician and managed by round the world winning yachtsman Mike
Sanderson, will also provide their training boat GBR-75 for the Nice
event.

“When looking at our team’s future sailing programme we knew we
wanted to compete in events that would give all parts of our team
and not just the sailing team, further hands-on operational
experience,” said Sir Keith Mills, Team Principal.

“Having sailed in the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series earlier this year
we quickly realised the concept of the WSTA’s Louis Vuitton regatta
projects completely fit the bill for our team and so we knew we had
to be there.’’

The second new entry sees the return of an iconic Italian sailing
brand, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s (YCCS) Azzurra. In 1983,
Azzurra was Italy’s first-ever America’s Cup challenger. The new
Azzurra team will be led by YCCS member Giovanni Maspero of Joe Fly,
and on the water skippered by Francesco Bruni with Tommaso Chieffi
as tactician, whilst managed by multiple Olympic medallist
Alessandra Sensini and others.

“Our common objectives and the faith placed in our team by the Yacht
Club Costa Smeralda and Commodore Bonadeo is extremely rewarding for
our entire sporting group. We feel an enormous responsibility but I
am firmly convinced that our sailing team’s merit will provide
excellent conditions to compete at the highest level,” says
Giovanni Maspero.

The event in Nice, to be sailed over the dates 7th to 22d of
November, is to be called the ‘’Louis Vuitton Trophy - WSTA – Nice".
The event is sanctioned by the world authority of sailing based in
England, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

Following the merger of Joe Fly with Azzurra, eight teams will
compete for the Louis Vuitton Trophy Nice: Azzurra (ITA), BMW ORACLE
Racing (USA), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), K-Challenge (FRA),
Swedish Challenge Artemis (SWE), Synergy Russian Sailing Team (RUS),
TeamOrigin (GBR) and Team French Spirit (FRA).

The Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice is jointly promoted and organised
by the teams, through the World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA),
Louis Vuitton and the Club Nautique de Nice (CNN) with the FFV
support .

The organizing team is already in Nice, working closely with the
city officials to make the event a great success in the wake of the
Louis Vuitton Pacific Series.

This is great news. A proper event for IACC yachts, involving most or all of the original AC challengers.
What a novel idea!
SNG has been telling us the 33rd America's Cup is to be held in Ras Al Khaimah in February.
Check the RAK website:
http://www.raktourism.com
Ernesto has told them it is a prestigious event, but who's going to be there? Just two teams.
I have a suggestion for how BMW ORACLE RACING can save a heap of money, keep Ernesto happy and sort out the AC mess for the rest of us, all in one go.
DON'T GO to RAK. Simply don't turn up.
Ernesto can race around the course by himself in the silly boat. It would be a dream come true for him. He will love it.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world can focus on the real event, the Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice in November. It will be great. True competition in proper boats. The rest of us will love that.
Maybe Scuttlebutt should start a viral campaign based on the simple slogan "DON'T GO".
Over to you Larry.

Re: [willbaillieu] Louis Vuitton Trophy [In reply to] Log-In to Post/Reply

I like the idea!! Why should Oracle continue with this sham? Just don't show up, and make the current affair be shown to be what it really is...and, when Ernesto asks for challengers for the next cup event, everyone agrees to not challenge. So, the cup goes into dishonorable retirement and Ernesto gets no kudos, to the contrary, he but must live with the embarrassment of being known as the person that killed the cup! In the meantime, the LV event becomes the next "Cup". Down the road, a new America's cup type event can get organized along the lines that Cayard has suggested. Then, we can actually put some teeth in the local (national) build and crewing requirements! This omission in the current cup events is one major thing missing. It has become a joke (along with the other aspects of the current situation).

I LIKE it! It makes a lot of sense!

Well now it looks like we're back to Valencia in Feb. I sure would hate to see the Cup go into retirement and I doubt it will. This aberration will almost certainly spawn a new and better boat for future cup matches no matter who wins. I certainly hope so but the LV Cup at least provides some nice IACC match racing while waiting for the AC to sort itself out. I haven't been to a Cup match since 2000 and, even then, wished I had gone a little earlier for the LV challenger competition as many of the teams were gone by the time I got there. I really like the format of the LV and the use of the America's Cup as the Super Bowl as it were. It would be nice if some holder of the cup would just "sign it over" to the LV format and let the boats move up to the finals based on current performance; not just automatically have a berth based on past boat, crew and race. I know it could be done just like all the other changes to the deed of trust. I would think it enough for the defender to just control the site or maybe be able to skip the first elimination round.
