It was just over ten years ago that Hugh Moore was persuaded to join the New York Yacht Club and was invited to serve on the Race Committee. Hugh had a long and varied career in the US NAVY having been at Pearl Harbor and serving during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. His last Navy command was aboard ‘Old Ironsides’ but in retirement Hugh still preferred to be afloat and for a while served as the skipper of the ‘Providence’. Hugh brought to the various race committees on which he served, a quiet dedication and pride in precision work that he had developed during his career in the Navy. Hugh had a way of getting things done right and spared no expense in developing HIS way of preparing to set race marks with all those additional gadgets that he brought aboard the mark boats. Hugh did not want to be aboard the main committee boat – he was an on-the–water man getting his hands dirty and sometimes I suspect that he tried to do too much – driving the boat, navigating with a GPS that he knew how to work and communicating in that clear crisp manner that left one in no doubt as to whether a response was expected or needed! Named as Sail Newport’s Volunteer of the Year in 2007, Hugh spent many retirement hours in mark set boats for a huge number of regattas in this area. Last week Hugh was aboard a mark boat for the very successful 6 Metre World Cup in Newport and right up to the point when he felt too sick to come out to the race course, he was making those final adjustments to anchors and warps. Hugh – you have set your final mark exactly where it is supposed to be and those who have had the opportunity to work with you salute you for your many hours of dedicated service to sailing in this community. - Robin Wallace
