Sparkman and Stephens is sad to report the passing of Robert Lee Garland ( Jan 22, 1908 - Dec 22,2009 ). Bob was born in Douglaston, New York and named by his grandfather who was an officer in the Army of Virginia. He sailed in the 1928 Transatlantic Race to Santander Spain on the Alden schooner Pinta. Bob graduated from Princeton in 1929 where he was a prominent middle distance runner. Bob married the love of his life Catherine Huston in 1930. For their honeymoon they chartered an engineless Alden schooner in San Juan and cruised the West Indies for 3 months ending in Port of Spain Trinidad. The couple returned to New York on the Mauritania. Bob joined Olin, Rod and Drake in 1930 and served in the brokerage department, board member and president until his retirement in 1994. His 64 year service at Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. was only interrupted by his service to his country. During WWII Bob was a Lt. Commander in the USN where he was involved with development and construction of fast motor torpedo boats. Bob sailed on all of the famous S&S boats out of Oyster Bay including Baruna, Windigo, Gesture, Northern Light, Argyll and Tempest. He was a champion Shields sailor for decades and was known locally as “the Silver Fox”. Bob gave up his windsurfer sometime in the mid 1990’s. He was a member of New York Yacht Club, Cruising Club of America, and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. We thank you Robert for your insight, knowledge and leadership. I am sure Olin, Rod and Drake have saved you a berth. -- Rex G. Herbert Jr., Yacht Broker

To my friends at S&S,
The Silver Fox lived a long a great life. He added to my early years in yacht design with Olin, Rod and Chief Engineer Gil Wyland from 1970-77. What an amazing team they were!

Bob was as clued in about waterfront business and people as anyone. He conveyed wisdom and confident control of situations, communicated in a comfortable manner and with the highest integrity.

He‘ll be in great company with his past shipmates.
