EIGHT BELLS: Mike Richey Log-In to Post/Reply

Mike Richey, who was born In England in 1917, died on 22nd December 2009, aged 92. In 1964, to some extent encouraged by his friend or Francis Chichester who had won the just single-handed transatlantic race, Mike became committed to single-handed sailing. He edited The Sailing Encyclopedia (Stanford Maritime) and was for many years General Editor of the series of nautical books published by Hollis and Carter. In 1979 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of Navigation and in 1986 the Seamanship Medal of the Royal Cruising Club. In 1997 he entered the Guinness Book of Records for having sailed single handed across the Atlantic and arriving at the age of 80 years 31 days.

Michael *Richey* sailed the original Jester and her replacement in many of the singlehanded trans-atlantic (OSTAR) races. I enjoyed sailing with him, as Mike lived up to the original spirit of the OSTAR. Back in the '76 event we had an informal trophy called the "Comfy Trophy" for the sailor who had the most comfortable voyage. Getting wet cost you points, obviously, while having a clean set of sheets upon arrival in Newport helped with your score. Logs had to be submitted to Murray Davis, Publisher of Cruising World, who was the sole judge and arbiter.

There were a lot of headwinds in that race, and Jester's chinese lug rig wasn't made for pointing, so Mike retired to cruise the West Coast of Ireland. Had he submitted his log, I'm sure he would have won the Comfy Trophy.

We all remember Mike fondly -- Tony Lush
