Best cruising GPS under $1,000 Log-In to Post/Reply

So my father likes doublehanded coastal cruising his 44' cutter with his wife. At 75 years, he has some eyesight cataract issues. His navigation habit is using a handheld Garmin 76 series and physically transferring to paper charts. Frankly, I do the same. Question now is, his handheld expired and he is in the market to buy another. He is anchoring in Miami for a few days before continuing on his way north to Maine and plans to buy his new GPS in Miami so we have little time for feedback. I am suggesting that he buy a Garmin map 392 chartplotter and permanently mounting it at helm-station so he has the comfort of a large color sceen as well as current and tide info while driving. Maybe mounting a simple repeater or cheapo handheld w/ external antennae down below at nav table to be able to see coordinates and plot on paper charts.
So what would you recommend in a similar situation??
Thanks in advance...
Jose Villalon

For right around $1000 you can get the Garmin GPSMAP 478. I haven't actually used it but had it highly recommended to me by someone who uses one. It comes loaded with charts and streetmaps, can go from car to boat and has nice mount. If you add their XM radio antenna it will give you satellite weather overlay as well, and might be easy to learn coming from the older Garmin. I would be interested in hearing from other people who have used it. I have also been considering buying the Raymarine RC400. Less bells and whistles but easy to use and I like the Navionics Gold cartography.

This thread didn't seem to stimulate much of a response. Maybe it's been discussed to-bordom-come before... Thank you for your comments Wythe.
I spoke with him last night and he followed the suggestion to go with a large screen GPS mounted at the helm as opposed to the handheld. He bought the Garmin GPSMAP 398 with depth. Seems to be happy with the choice. Time will tell...
