Atlantis WeatherGear contest: Name the 1984 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team Log-In to Post/Reply

Atlantis WeatherGear is the technical and casual apparel partner of the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) for the Olympic and Paralympic quadrennium leading to the 2012 Games.

To pay tribute to the 1984 US Sailing Team, which medaled in all seven events (3-gold, 4-silver), Scuttlebutt and Atlantis WeatherGear wants to see who can name the team members in the attached team photo.

Post your answer in this Forum thread (click Reply in upper right), and all entrants will be eligible for a USSTAG Microburst Jacket that will be raffled on May 3rd.

And the other people in the photo? Can you list the alternates and support team members?

Everyone that submits the list of names is eligible for the raffle.

The picture appeared very red and was difficult to see in detail on my computer but here it goes:

Steve Benjamin, Hans Steinfeld
John Bertrand
Jonathan McKee, Carl Buchan
Scott Steele
Robbie Haines, Edward Trevelyan, Rod Davis
Bill Buchan, Steven Erickson
Randy Smyth, Jay Glaser

It looks like Paul Cayard is in the picture but I doon't believe that he was on the team and I think that I remember that Carl Eichenlaub was on the team as support but I don't see him in the picture.

As the Star Class Officer for the 1984 Olympics I was right in the action every day from measuring to the pull from behind victory for Bill Buchan in the Star Class. During the last race I was out on Angelita the restored 8 meter that Owen Churchill sailed to gold in the 1932 Olympics in LA. As we cruised around the finish line as the Stars beat up the last leg we knew that Buchan had to win the race to take home the gold. He had already used his discard race due to a broken shroud. Bill's Star was the only one in the fleet with a silver mast and as the boats rounded the leeward mark we could see that silver mast pick off one boat after another. When he crossed the finish line to take the Gold Medal it was one of the best legs of yacht racing I have ever witnessed. Although Paul Elvstrom, sailing a Tornado, was older than Bill at the time, I think Bill has the record for the oldest person to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Anyway, the reagatta was first rate with great conditions and I will remember my experience forever. I still have my tacky Levis Baby Blue Blazer, grey pants, shirt, hat and shoes from my Official Uniform from the event.

OK, in the upper row, left to right you have Carl Buchan, Ed Trevelyan, Chris Steinfeld, John Bertrand, Bill Buchan, Robbie Haines, Paul Cayard, Some Team Administrator Guy, Rod Davis, Sam Merrick, and Robert Hobson. In the lower row, left to right, you have: Steve Ericsson, Scott Steele, Steve Benjamin, John Shadden, Randy Smythe, Jay Glaser, Some Other Guy I can't Identify, Major Hall, Jonathan McKee and the inimitable Carl Eichenlaub. 1984 in Long Beach was cool. I was there, but only as an an outlier -- an alternate on the U.S.V.I. team. We had two guys post decent scores, Peter Holmberg in the Finn and Kenny Klein in the boardsailing group.

I stole this from Legler's post, but I had most of them right on my own. What incredible results this team had!

Corrections to other comments:
1.The photo was taken at the Hotel next to the Queen Mary looking across the bay to the Downtown Long Beach Marina in the background.
2. The Windglider sailboard was not an exhibition event, but one of the sailing classes. The Windsurfer sailboard board was used for an exhibition freestyle event in Santa Barbara as a way to settle the sailboard patent dispute with the Windsurfer company and the LA Olympic organizers.
