Organization Description:
Courageous Sailing was established in 1987 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by the late South Boston sailing enthusiast Harry McDonough. It was Harry’s dream to teach children from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds lessons in partnership and trust, while delivering the ultimate sailing experience. Over the past 26 years, Courageous has become a nationally recognized, year-round educational center for community sailing and youth development. In 2011, we were honored to be named one of the top 10 community sailing programs nationwide by both US Sailing and Sail Magazine. In 2013, Courageous Sailing and 18 other Boston-based nonprofit organizations were collectively awarded this year’s New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning award for our work on the Boston Summer Learning Project, an enrichment-based initiative to halt summer learning loss among academically at-risk Boston youth. As a community sailing center, we strive to transform lives through sailing by instilling confidence, inspiring leadership and teamwork, and teaching life skills.
