Mystic Seaport is seeking summer seasonal sailing instructors to teach sailing to youth and adults. The sailing instructors will be teaching beginning and intermediate sailing classes to youth, adults, and families in JY15 sailboats. In many cases, the sailing instructors will be the first contact that the student has with Community Sailing. He/she, therefore, must be friendly, courteous, and able to engage people with infectious energy. Instructors must be enthusiastic about teaching children and adults to sail and the leadership skills inherent in the sport of sailing. Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development
Teach safety, boat handling and sailing to children and adults in dinghies (JY15s) who are beginning, intermediate or racing sailors
Develop and follow lesson plans that include dry land and on-the-water drills and inclement weather activities
Must have empathy for the students and be able to adapt to their individual needs
Responsible for notifying students of any changes in class times, postponement due to weather conditions and make-up dates
Communicate in a respectful, timely, and thorough manner with parents
Keep accurate records
Care and maintenance of boats and the facility
Help supervise and be a mentor for Counselors-in-Training (CITs)
Participate 100% with activities; enjoy playing, and not "sit on the sidelines", be visible throughout the day, lead transition times and supervise campers
At least 16 years of age
Standard First Aid and CPR certified (training provided)
Safe boating certification preferred
US Sailing Level 1 certification preferred
Experience teaching sailing preferred
Must have a passion for sailing and working with kids and adults.
Must have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
Must possess strong problem solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.
Experience working with children and youth (and adults) in formal or informal settings; ability to engage students in a dynamic and energetic manner
Self-directed learning, ability to retain learned information, and use of knowledge to engage audiences of all ages and learning styles
Excellent customer service and communication skills
Must possess and reflect a polished professional demeanor in a variety of situations.
Willingness to work a highly flexible schedule corresponding to the needs of the Museum
Physical/Mental Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
Deliver programs in venues that can be cold, wet, hot, or dirty; work outside in all weather
Position requires sufficient eyesight, hearing, and physical stamina to fulfill successfully the requirements of the Community Sailing program
Weekend and holiday work assignments are required
