New Bedford Yacht Club seeking a Sailing School Director

POSITION TITLE: Sailing School Director
REPORTS TO: General Manager, Sailing School Committee Chairperson
SUPERVISES: Sailing School Coaches, Instructors, and Junior Instructors

The New Bedford Yacht Club was incorporated in 1878 and enjoys a well-deserved reputation for excellence in sailing. The New Bedford Yacht Club is currently seeking a Sailing School Director to lead the 2020 Summer Season. The 2020 Summer Season is comprised of an 11-week salaried position beginning in early June and running through late August, including one week of set-up, 9 weeks of classes, and one week of breakdown after classes end. This position also receives a monthly stipend from September through May with an average of 10 hours offsite per month to prepare for the upcoming season.
The New Bedford Yacht Club Sailing School has on average 200 sailors aged 5-17 throughout the summer.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Sailing School Director is the ambassador of the NBYC Sailing School. He or she is responsible for the management and general operation of the Yacht Club's Sailing School. The Director will design, implement and manage the daily operation of the club's numerous sailing classes and offerings. In addition, the Director will field and manage parent inquiries regarding sailing school programs, payments and acceptance into programs. This position requires exceptional skills, finesse, and a true investment in the program’s success with hands-on involvement. The best candidate will be “all in” and own this role.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Design and implement a wide-range of programs and classes geared towards the 5 to 17 year old sailor.
* Incorporate the Club’s existing boats (420s, Optis, Bics, UFOs, Sonars) into skill-specific programs.
* Perform all duties and services required of waterfront and shoreside personnel in a safe, courteous, efficient and professional manner at all times.
* Oversee the safe, efficient and economical operation of the Club's Sailing School . Participate actively in carrying out this objective.
* Hire, train, schedule and supervise all Sailing School staff. Conduct pre-season and on-going training with a focus on providing a best-in-class program to all sailing school participants.
* Promote the Sailing School’s mission statement, coach and motivate staff to deliver a best-in-class experience.

JOB TASKS/DUTIES:
* Creates and conducts training sessions at start of season, and as necessary throughout season.
* Schedules all personnel associated with Sailing School services. Creates monthly schedule in advance, posts and distributes to all staff, posts schedule on server and forwards copy in advance to General Manager.
* Acts as the primary individual in carrying out the management, and arrange for the maintenance and repair of Club Sailing School facilities and vessels. Knowledge of craft repair and maintenance is essential.
* Maintains records of hours worked by all employees and submits to accounting department for payroll purposes. Manages overtime per policy.
* Plans and implements seasonal start-up and seasonal shut-down activities for sailing school.
* Reports any misconduct of members, guests, or crew members taking place on club grounds.
* Attends staff and department meetings.
* Review budget yearly with General Manager and Sailing School Committee.
* Manages off-location / away sailing school race events, and sailing school awards, and social events as needed.
* Fields comments and concerns from parents (both member and non-member) and actively addresses concerns in a professional manner. Communicates concerns to Sailing School Committee Chairperson and General Manager.
* Performs other appropriate tasks assigned by the Sailing School Committee Chairman and/or General Manager.

WORK SCHEDULE:
* 40 hours per week (minimum). Schedule changes throughout the sailing school season. Must be flexible and available weekends and holidays as necessary including but not limited to weekend participation at the New Bedford Junior Regattas.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
* Four-year advanced degree preferred
* Prior experience creating and leading a youth sailing program
* Experienced hiring, training and supervising High School/College aged sailing school instructors.
* Ability to work exceptionally both independently and as a team leader. Ability to multi-task in a busy environment. Must have good interpersonal skills and excellent communication and compartmentalization skills.
* Must have exceptional boat handling skills.
* Operates the ship-to-shore radio equipment in accordance with rules and procedures set forth by the Federal Communications Commission.

COMPENSATION
* Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

SKILLS and CERTIFICATIONS:
*US Sailing Level I certification required
* US Sailing Level II certification preferred
* Staff management experience required
* Boat maintenance and repair knowledge a plus
