Title: Head Coach

Reports to: Jr. Sailing Director, interacts with the Junior Advisory Board and Yacht Club Manager.

Summary: The Head Coach, under the direction of the Jr. Sailing Director, provides all coaching for High School teams and regatta coaching, both on and off-site. The Head Coach coordinates directly with the Jr. Sailing Director, who supervises this position and all other youth instructors and coaches. The Head Coach works mainly outdoors and on the water, generally Wednesday and Friday afternoon, and weekends.

Essential Functions:
• Partner with other staff to provide leadership and guidance to sailors to enable full participation of club teams in regattas and other events.
• Develop constructive changes to the program to promote ABYC sailing program.
• Coach all High School practices and regattas, with assistant coach as needed.
• Coach Optimist practices and regattas (Optimist coaching is not required; however, it is preferred.)
• Develop and lead training of other coaches and summer instructors. Assist Director in scheduling assistant coaches for practice and regattas.
• Coach in ABYC’s summer program.

Secondary Functions:
• Assist Youth Sailing Director with coaching needs during summer-time team development.

Required Skills
• Ability to coach at all levels.
• Self-starter with ideas and projects.
• Ability to operate a full range of small sailboats and motorboats safely.
• Must be able to analyze situations with regard to safety and operations and make decisions quickly and effectively.
• A demeanor and ability to stand up, respectfully, to parents and members when they are being critical.
• Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure and difficult conditions, to protect the safety of sailors and equipment.
• Knowledge of water safety: certified as US Sailing Instructor Level 1 or above.
• CPR/First-Aid/AED certified.
• Experience in College Sailing.
